I said to myself (out loud) "What the heck am I doing !?!" . Shortly thereafter , the house was listed and the hunt for a rural property was underway. When we first came out to Pass Lake to look at the property that is now Silver Dog Farm, I felt at home. It was going to be a project, as the house needed updates and a lot of work to get it where it needed to be, but it just felt right. 123 acres
, overlooking Lake Superior , just 5 kms down the Sibley Peninsula that is home to the Sleeping Giant. It started off with just the dogs and a cat... 2 pugs, 2 Silver Labrador Retrievers, and a fluffy mouser! We sadly lost a pug, gained a Mastiff and a rescue mutt, a couple goats, a couple horses and a whole bunch of chickens. Renovations are constantly ongoing, amid normal day to day country problems and animal chores and expansion of animal areas. Last year I harvested all of the raspberries and a lot of the apples and turned them into jellies, jams, and preserves. The direction we are heading is simple living, knowing what is put into(and onto) our bodies, living off our land as much as possible, upcycling things that would normally be trashed, and harvesting materials from our land instead of buying commercially. A kind of modern homesteading while still maintaining full time employment in Thunder Bay. If you come out to visit, it may not look like much but there has been , and will be, a lot of blood , sweat , and tears put into every project. This is my version of paradise, and you are welcome to join in on the adventure of making it as fun, happy, and rewarding as possible. I will be posting stories, musings, pictures, maybe even some recipes and some advise to anyone who might be in the mood to pay attention.
