🌧 It's been a rainy June 🌧

Our hens are enjoying the reprieve from our typical 35°c summer heat, and the cooler temps have allowed us a few extra weeks for shipping hatching eggs orders.

We are starting to wind down here on the farm so that we can enjoy our summer. Our final big incubation for 2026 AND our final hatching programs begin next weekend 💕

While getting our garden ready for the season we discovered this little song sparrow nest. Needless to say, that section of our garden shall go untouched for the next few weeks while these chicks hatch and are raised up.

Song Sparrows find a mate and work together to raise and protect their young. Mom and Dad keep a watchful eye on us while we garden 💕

Pemberton and Squamish Customers: Is anyone interested in silkie chicks?

I will be bringing some home for myself beginning of July and I'm happy to bring extras for anyone interested

Psa. Marans do NOT always lay the same colour egg every day.

A hen can lay a wide variety of shades, speckles, no speckles, heavy bloom, no heavy bloom etc. AND throughout the season the hens also tend to "run out of ink". So when you purchase marans eggs from a breeder don't be quick to get upset if you get a lighter coloured egg and assume that the offspring frim that egg can't lay dark. You could hatch a chick out of a marans egg that's a 4 that will go on to lay a 7 or darker on the scale.

That being said, our goal at Mountain View Farm is to keep lines that provide fairly consistent dark egg genetics

Last year we spent $450 on Marans hatching eggs and only 4 hatched.

The 🍒 on top - only ONE was a female 🙃. Her name is Dottie

We will be hatching out as many of her eggs as we possibly can this year. (so far we have 5 beautiful healthy marans babies). In 2027 we will be offering purebred bbs copper marans hatching eggs and chicks.

As all hens eggs do, Dottie's eggs have provided a wide spectrum of pigment, but she has also blessed us with a few HEAVY blooms 😍

This little hen will have literally paved the way for our entire marans breeding program.

She has the most phenomenal temperament, always the first to run and great me at the door and be toted around in my arms. She's gentle, and kind, and curious. And the roosters we have hatched out have not shown an ounce of aggression towards us!
