When the calves are resting, one or two cows will often stay back and keep watch while the others go eat.

They rotate duties, but just like any workplace… some cows definitely do more than others.

An older farmer once told me cows also tend to lie with their family—sometimes across multiple generations.

I’m not sure if they know they’re related or if they just prefer familiar company, but it’s fascinating to watch.

Had to stop for a minute while checking calves this morning and admire Patina and her mom all cuddled up together.

Patina has elite genetics on both her sire and dam side, but today she’s just a happy calf enjoying life beside her mama.

We have high hopes for this young heifer and are excited to watch her grow and see what kind of cow she turns into. The future of a herd starts with calves like this.
