Craft Malt Month 🌾

The Red Shed team will be travelling throughout the province to celebrate Craft Malt Month. Craft Malt Month is a celebration put on by the Craft Maltsters Guild to showcase products and producers who make extremely local products with local malt from small producers. Three stops we have circled are Blindman Brewing, Barrel Fest and Bridgeland Distillery.

Barrel Fest by Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company is such a rad event, it brings renowned breweries from across Canada to celebrate beer that has been aged in a barrel. This year there are a couple of international breweries in attendance as well. Blind Enthusiasm was recently informed that they won some more medals from the World Beer Awards. 🏆

Also today Blindman Brewing is hosting their 11th anniversary party. This family-friendly event includes live music, co****le and all sorts of beer. Expect bottles from the cellar, some new releases and some special one-off casks. 🍻 🎉

Finally, Bridgeland Distillery is Canada’s only Craft Malt Certified Distillery. Their dedication to local ingredients is unparalleled, whether it be malt from Red Shed Malting or Taber Corn from Molnar Farms. 🇨🇦 🥃

Barrel Fest takes a community to put together. 🍻

Outstanding in Their Field – Brewsmith Brewing 🌾

Colin has been a huge supporter of Red Shed Malting since long before he opened Brewsmith. He’s always excited to show off the malts that he uses to breweries doing a collab.

The first we can recall was when he was with The Dandy Brewing Company and did a collab with Canadian brewing titan: Brasserie Dieu du Ciel. And since then, he hasn’t stopped, in his own words:

“We love using Red Shed malt at Brewsmith and what better way to share that love than by utilizing it for collaboration brewing with our brewer friends. This year we’ve already brewed 4 collab brews using Red Shed including:

* Route #1 Hazy DIPA with Burn Block Social Club, a hop-forward beer but with a fantastic base thanks to Penhold Pilsner (my personal favourite base malt) and Red Shed’s perfect, plump Oat Malt.

* Gateway #1 New Zealand Pilsner was brewed Sea Change Brewing Co. new Calgary brewery (the first beer actually brewed at this site!) utilizing the thiol potential of Penhold Pilsner in a thiolized lager heavy in New Zealand hops.

* Clear Skies West Coast IPA was one of two home and away collabs with Tool Shed Brewing Company recently that utilized the same hop trio (Mosaic, Idaho 7 and Strata) in one West Coast IPA and one Hazy IPA. The West Coast version brewed at Brewsmith, used 100% Red Shed malt with Penhold Pilsner as the base and Kananaskis and Biscuit adding the malt complexity that suits the style without lingering sweetness or body.

* LIL Biere de Garde was just released a few days ago. Brewed with new friends met while in France in March for a yeast seminar - from Arnprior, Ontario. We both wanted to use Red Shed as the basis for this malt forward, high ABV lager/saison hybrid utilizing Penhold once again, Kananaskis, Biscuit and a touch of a higher kilned version of Kananaskis that acted as a CaraMunich replacement.”

Finished another beautiful Churchill barley field last night! 🌾

This morning we serviced the equipment and are excited to move on to our Stanza barley field in the East Quarter. Another great-looking field and good day to be harvesting!
