Glorybee Apiary

Glorybee Apiary A small Eastern Ontario commercial beekeeping operation dedicated to breeding gentle, hygienic bees suitable for beekeeping in the Ontario climate.

I am an ORHBS member since 2018. Glorybee began about 25 years ago in Fergus, when Marlowe purchased 3 colonies from a friend. After increasing to 36 colonies over the next few years Marlowe and his wife thought there could be more to beekeeping and decided to form a small business of it. Jan came up the name "Glorybee Apiaries" and they started selling liquid and comb honey along with candles fr

om the farm house they lived at, and at local craft shows. A change in work hours and a growing family prevented Glorybee from growing further but what did develop was Marlowe's interest in rearing honeybee queens. After all, it is much more fun to play with the bees than lug honey laden supers around, (although honey production is unavoidable). Upon retiring from his regular work, Marlowe spent a summer with a local Ontario queen breeder supplementing his knowledge of bees and later that year moved north to Loring, On. Loring is a small, somewhat isolated community along the Pickerel River system between Hwy 11 and hwy 69 south of Sudbury and North Bay. There are thousands of acres of old but still maintained pasture lands but no commercial crop production and thus no commercial chemical spraying. This is where Glorybee queens and nucs are produced. Open mated queens were purchased from the Tuckamore Bee Company in Freelton, On and the University of Guelph apiary. From this stock, those queens producing offspring that exhibit gentleness, good over wintering ability and hygienic behavior are bred to produce stock with similar traits. If you are interested in purchasing, Ontario bred queens, nucs or honey Marlowe would love to hear from you. You are invited to contact him by phone, email or FB message with your inquiries.

Hey friends. In the coming weeks Im likely going to say goodbye to Mark Zuckerberg and the ever increasing garbage on Facebook and Instagram. It is becoming impossible to keep out the constant barrage of ads and false information. Friends obviously have been hacked and I receive inappropriate emails etc. The increasing abilities of the platforms to gather personal information and track trends is disturbing. It is disappointing as I have enjoyed connecting with old friends, relatives and some Id have not met without these platforms and enjoyed putting out fun bee videos- but there’s a plethora of those. I‘ve also enjoyed following some very talented and sound beekeepers and outdoors people - thank you for your content and enjoyment - I hope I meet you sometime on the trail or canoeing - I’ll follow you still on YouTube. Anyone who wishes to connect with me knows how to find me: [email protected] .

Why does every one of our down spouts look like this? I spoke with the wife of the couple we bought the house from in June about their mower. “ I love our zero turn mower” she said. “ I can zip around the lawn and finish it in 1/2 hour!”

Im not sure if this copy and paste will work at the end. It’s a video warning against scammers regarding a quality product. Im sick of scammers praying on people by using actual reviews or stock photos of bona fide quality products to sell their cheap junk. In this case a company “Pedition” is trying to sell a cheap knock off of by using their website photos and clips from an excellent youtube review by .Im wearing the actual product in the photo and it is amazing. I don’t know why facebook/ instagram allows this thievery. Don’t Be Scammed by Cheap Wool Anorak Knockoffs!

Some shots from my recent trip north with my good friend; toast made on the side of the “hobo stove”, sun, rain and snow, lows of -3C, highs of 17C, a content dog and best of all good fellowship. My tarp over the camp btw from . Its 15x15 and has been invaluable. It has taken some heavy winds with no rips or signs of stress on the loop attachment points. Now in its third season.

Little miracles of life happening in the bee yard. I didn’t see this Monarch chrysalis on the lid of the hive until I was putting it back on. I hope I didn’t jar it to much. There’s a lot of milkweed here so I’ll have to be more watchful. Doing mite treatment today.

Way too long since I’ve been out. I woke up this morning and decided that the mite checks will wait, I’m heading out. Went to Crotch lake in North Frontenac for the day. Found an island site and chilled for the day. It was marvelous. Griff loved it too. It was my first time here but my son in law goes here frequently… goes here too so I had to go! On the way stopped in at this old cemetery - Im fascinated with them; wondering about the people who mourned at the graveside 120 years before, their lives, how they lived out in what then was really remote. The area probably was more robust then than now. 3-4 family names repeated in numerous headstones. Aromatic creeping sage covered nearly the entire cemetery - beautiful. A great day all around

Small crop this year for me, even though it’s only August 3. Taking nucs from my surviving colonies in June weakened then sufficiently. With moving I did not want a big crop of honey this year so, I got my wish. Theres been a nectar dearth for the past week or so but if here is like Loring, August will pick up and I’ll get another 1000 - 1500 lbs by Sept. We’ll see.

I really have to get on the mite checks again next week. Don’t want any late summer surprises.

Fun watching the fire flies tonight. If the volume is up you can just hear the coyotes a few fields over.
