π£BABY ANNOUNCEMENT!!! π£
"This hen was DETERMINED to be momma!!"
Last week, Mike heard a tiny peep and then spotted a wee red chick running through our chicken yard all by itself. Thinking it must have been one of our newly acquired meat chicks, he quickly picked up the little one and brought it to the house for inspection, fearing the worst. Firstly, our meat chicks are nowhere near our layer hens and this tiny cutie was red...not yellow like the meat chicks... so this one had us stumped, especially since we gather our eggs periodically throughout the day. How could this be?
We decided to place it in with our, then, three day old meat chicks, in the already (conveniently) set up toasty brooder, to eat drink and be merry. It was immediately welcomed to the gang and everyone was happy.
The next morning was my day to tend to the layer flock. Low and behold, a red hen was out in the yard before I had opened the door for the rest, proudly displaying a second little chick; this time it was yellow. After a bit of Sherlocking, I managed to find she had dug her way under one of our two coops, set up a cozy little home for herself and hid away until she had her little family. There red one is still vacationing in the brooder, but we left the yellow one with momma.
Please note, we are manifesting they are both hens (π)!! We already have 3 roosters....yikes!
Both babies and momma are doing great!!π₯°π
There are many lessons to learn from these beautiful creatures! A bit of determination, a little elbow grease, a dream...and yes, sometimes a little help from friends and family...can create a very fulfilling life. Little Red Hen made it happen. So can we!! π£ππ
