Geoff Webb, Wine Maker & General Manager, and all of the Black Prince staff welcome you to visit Black Prince Winery. Black Prince Winery was conceived in 2000 by John Sambrook (Opimian Society) and Winemaker Geoff Webb. They wanted to establish a winery in this lovely, picturesque area of Prince Edward County, a region that has the viticultural landscape to produce first-rate wines. They chose Picton, conveniently located in the heart of this bucolic region. Geoff Webb's relationship with wine began in 1986 when he went to work for Canada's largest wine-buying cooperative - The Opimian Society & Opimian Vineyard Trust - vineyard partners in Napa, California with The William Hill Wine Company - when Geoff got his first exposure to viticulture & winemaking. Webb then worked for Legendary Wines (1989) until 1993 when he founded Wines By Design, importers and blenders of wines from around the globe, incl. France, Italy, Spain and Argentina. In 1999 the California partnership was wound-up and Webb was invited to join the group to head-up a new Canadian wine venture. He chose the up and coming area of Prince Edward County to invest, plant vines and start a winery in Picton, where Black Prince was born in 2001. From 2001 on Webb has called upon the services of his mentor Michael Fallow (Winemaker William Hill, Napa) and Terence Van Rooyen (Winemaker/Professor Niagara College Teaching Winery) for guidance and advice, and both have helped Webb shape the winemaking program at Black Prince over the last 20 years. We wanted to choose a name which was relevant to The County but ‘Prince Edward Winery’ seemed a bit too generic. We then researched the history of the Royal ‘Edwards’…
The Black Prince was an Edward, eldest son of Edward III, and became a legend in his own lifetime. He was one of the most successful commanders during the 100 years war (Battles of Poitiers & Crecy) and a model of both chivalry and courtesy. He also ruled over a large area of Aquitaine which included Bordeaux, so the relevance to wine was a deciding factor and our prince was found. So with the name in place, land purchased, vines were planted and a fully operational winery was created. Our doors were open to the public in October 2003. Black Prince Winery, ruled by a board of directors under the helm of president Derek Lederer and GM Geoff Webb, is dedicated to crafting fine, accessible wines showcasing what this wonderful area has to offer.
