Join us at Hagerman Farms on Saturday, November 14th from 10 AM–3 PM for a festive artisan market hosted by Jenn from Farmhouse Eats and Cody-Rae from Scrunchie & Go!

The event will take place in the outdoor vegetable stand and will feature a cozy outdoor fire with a s’more station, a wreath and planter box workshop, local vendors, and the bakery open with fresh baked goods.

Last — and most certainly not least — in the “people who made my season possible” series… Mom. ❤️

Getting a picture for this post may actually be harder than running the bakery, because Mom does not enjoy having her picture taken. 😂

Which is funny, because most days she is one of the biggest driving forces behind this place.

Since I’ve had kids, Mom has been the one here first thing in the morning. She’s behind so much of our morning bake-off, she’s the main set of hands assembling your pies, she’s a multitasker extraordinaire, and she keeps the rest of us — myself included — moving in the right direction.

Before working full-time alongside me, Mom spent her career as a nurse. And let me tell you, having a retired nurse working in a bakery/farm market has come in handy more times than you’d probably imagine. 😂

Family, staff, customers with bee stings, unexpected falls and the occasional “Heather, can you come look at this?” — apparently retirement from nursing just meant relocating the clinic to the bakery.

But there is so much more to Mom than everything she physically does here.
She has a generational work ethic that is pretty hard to match. She sees what needs doing and does it. She doesn’t need to be asked. She can have five things on the go and somehow know exactly where all five stand — while also noticing the thing the rest of us completely missed.

And I’ve realized through writing all of these posts that so much of what I’ve been praising in my staff — showing up, working hard, taking care of people, pitching in wherever you’re needed — are things I learned by watching her.

But even all of that isn’t the most important part.

She’s my person.

The person I can tell any story to. Ask any question. Bring any problem, worry, ridiculous idea or concern to. Business, kids, family, life — Mom is usually one of the first people I want to talk to.

I hope everyone gets to have someone like that in their corner. And if you’re lucky enough that it’s your mom too, you know exactly what I mean. ❤️

Some day shes going to decide to actually retire, and finding someone to replace everything she does around is going to be nearly impossible.

Next up in the “people who made my season possible” series… Ava. ❤️

Ava has been part of our crew for three seasons now, although this year she decided to branch out on me and take a full-time job with a local catering company.

But she still committed to Sundays at Farmhouse Eats.

Every. Single. Sunday. All season long.

And she shows up — even after a late catering gig the night before, even when she’s tired, plus plenty of other days when I’ve sent out the “any chance you can work?” SOS. 😂

Sundays are Ava’s day to hold down the store, and there’s something pretty wonderful about having someone you trust enough to know that things are going to get done.

She’s my fiery ginger with the ringlet curls and the spicy personality to match — and I’m keeping her for as long as she’ll let me. 😂❤️

Ava is another one of those kids where our families’ stories go back long before Farmhouse Eats. She reminds me so much of her mom, who I spent countless lunch hours with during our high school years… but there’s definitely a little bit of her dad in there too, whom I’ve also known pretty much my whole life.

Another local farm family. Another full-circle connection. ❤️

Over the last three years we’ve watched Ava grow — while, in her own way, she’s helped this little business grow too.

She’s a quick learner and has done just about everything around here: served customers, prepped food, washed dishes, received orders and, perhaps most importantly…

answered the phone calls I don’t want to answer. 😂

That’s love right there.

Ava, thank you for choosing to come back for another season, for giving me your Sundays even when your weeks were already full, and for being someone I know I can count on.

Thanks for another year, Ava. ❤️

You can branch out all you want…

Next up in the “people who made my season possible” series… Lyla. ❤️

Now this one has technically been kicking around Farmhouse Eats since she was a wee little babe — being family and all — but this was the year Lyla officially made it onto the payroll. 😂

Although I have a feeling most of you already know her.

Over the years you’ve probably seen her around the farm market, hanging around the bakery, or more recently inside with us pumping out ice cream cones and helping wherever she’s needed.

And I have to say, watching her work with all of you this summer has made me pretty proud.

She is genuinely kind and polite with our customers, she knows a little bit about the ins and outs of both the bakery and the farm, and she’s grown up knowing that when you’re part of this family, everybody pitches in somewhere.

She’s also a big cousin extraordinaire — and as someone raising four kids, I can’t tell you how much I love watching the relationships they have with their older cousins. ❤️

There is so much I could say about how much I love this kid… who, apparently, really isn’t much of a kid anymore.

Maybe one day she’ll take over the bakery with a cousin or two. Maybe she’ll decide she’d rather be a farmer like Papa and her mom. Or maybe she’ll head off and do something completely different that none of us see coming.

For now, she’s a loyal friend, an amazing big cousin, a hockey lover and — perhaps most importantly — a girl who appreciates the finer things in life: delicious food, family time, movie nights and walks through the woods.

So basically… we raised her right. 😂

Lyla, I’ve loved you since long before you were old enough to be useful around here. 😂❤️ But getting to actually work alongside you this year and watch you become your own person has been pretty darn special.

Thank you for being part of my season, kiddo.

And as for taking over Farmhouse Eats someday…

I’ll keep the keys handy. 😉❤️
