We're excited at West Coast Bee Supply to be hosting North Fraser Bee Club's April 29th Meeting with Guest Speaker Presentation from Julia Common. Non-members are invited to attend too :)

Julia has BSc and MSc degrees in Agriculture, and is a Bee Master and BCHPA Certified Instructor. She is a passionate speaker, a skilled beekeeper, and an excellent mentor. As a co-founder and former chief beekeeper of Hives for Humanity, Julia oversaw all of their beehives across the Vancouver region. Julia has retired from Hives for Humanity and is now an independent beekeeping consultant.

🐝 Our Basic Beekeeping Course is coming up! If you've seen our post on Mason Bees but decided that Honeybees are still the ones for you, consider taking this class held by our experienced beekeepers!

We will be holding Basic Beekeeping on the weekend of April 13&14. It is a 2-day course held in-person at our store plus an additional field day at the hive on a later date.

Basic Beekeeping will give you everything from the ground up to a deep dive into managing beehives specifically to our climate in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, BC. This includes an in-depth look at disease and pest control.

🐝 Spring just rolled around the corner, alas! What better time to introduce more bees to your backyard! They are your friendly neighbourhood pollinators!
This post will be on Mason Bees.

Here are some facts on mason bees:
- they are very effective pollinators!
- they stay close to home, flying within 300 feet to do their work
- pollination results in better quality and larger garden yields
- they live in a colony, situated in natural or human-made holes
- they rarely sting, males do not have stingers and females only sting if they feel tremendously threatened; their stings are mild
- these little guys are low maintenance
- if you find harvesting honey hassle-some, guess what? These critters don’t produce honey like honeybees do!

⭐️ We carry all the supplies you’d need to own mason bees, from the actual bees to houses and clay!
Kits are inexpensive and a great way to introduce yourself to these hard working creatures! Visit us in store to inquire!

It's nearly early spring, and we just received new stock of fondant and pollen! Pop in our store to see what else we have :)

Nutritional supplements are essential (and recommended!) for giving your bees a strong start to the season. While feeding syrup promotes early hive growth, insufficient nutrition of syrup has negative impacts on critical growth stages and can lead to early season hive death.
Balanced intake of biological of macromolecules, carbohydrates (sugars), amino acids (proteins), vitamins, lipids (fat), and inorganic molecules (minerals) ensures better health, higher productivity of honey and brood, and better resistance to pesticides.

Lyson Fondant...
- is easy to use (ready right out of the box, no prep required!)
- contains all the essential nutrients
- does NOT contain filler!
- does NOT introduce unwanted moisture into the hive
- designed to be easily (and safely) consumed by honeybees
- easier to store than other similar products

Pollen supplements...
- are also easy to use! They can be fed in dry form or mixed with syrup to form a patty
- increase brood production (contains essential nutrients required for bees to produce larvae food and also generally improves hive health)
- does NOT contain any contaminants that otherwise may be carried by natural pollen (e.g. pathogens, pesticides, etc.)
- easily consumed and very well accepted by the bees!

Hello everyone!
We still have some bee packages left. Remember to order yours while supplies last!

What is left: 2024 Australian Bee Packages (box-style with caged Carniolan queen)
*our prices for bee packages are REDUCED this year!

There will be 2 shipments for packages: early March and late March, just in time to give your apiary a big boost for a strong startup this spring!
The earlier you place your order the earlier you will be able to pick up your packages.

Tasmanian (Australian) bees are free of Varroa Mite and we are happy to be able offer you packages of bees from this region.
Mites are a common but serious health concern for honeybees, so packages without mites will delay mite growth in your colonies and promote larger, stronger and healthier colonies for your apiary.
Orders come in a box style package with a caged queen of Carniolan lineage. Carniolan queens are better suited to B.C.'s climate; they do well in wet and cool climates with a short bee season.
There are 2 size options: 1kg & 1.5 kg
The extra 0.5kg (1lb) of bees gives your hives an advantageous head start!
Packages will be ready for pick up in early March from our store in Pitt Meadows
