It’s been a cool spring especially for an off grid greenhouse and farm. Our seedlings are coming along and will be ready to plant out like my grandfather and father would say after May 24. Enjoy the long weekend and heres to a great gardening season.

We have roughly 30 plus varieties of tomatoes that will be available at the farm and the markets we attend.

With the sun out and the hope that the cold will break we have been digging (shoveling) down the sides of the greenhouse to start the warming process. Plan is to start planting in the floor mid to late March. Fingers crossed.

So we got just under 1/2 of rain last night. So this shows what we are dealing with. The dark top area is what the rain did. Below that is basically dust. This causes 2 problem first when the sun comes out that water will evaporate. Second and more dangerous is that the plants that are struggling will reach for the water with there roots bringing them to the surface. Then the sun and +30 temps fry the roots. This drought has cost us at a minimum 50% of our yields. We are not the exception every eastern Ontario and most Ontario farmers are facing the same thing. I’ll let you figure out what that will do to the survival of small farms like ours. If you believe these farms are important it is imperative that you go to a farmers market or visit a farm gate. We are depending on you to truly get your elbows up.

It’s so dry the tomato horned worm is eating the tomatoes. Even they need water. This is one of the few we have seen this season so we will leave it to its lunch. Once full size they pupate in the ground and emerge as a month that is a night pollinator.
