Meet the unofficial security team of the vineyard: the Killdeer 🪶⁠

These little birds may look harmless, but they're masters of drama and determination. Instead of nesting in trees, they lay their perfectly camouflaged eggs on the ground, often in gravelly spots, as shown here. ⁠

Get too close and you'll witness their Oscar-worthy "broken wing" performance, designed to lure visitors away from the nest. This girl was NOT happy when we placed a pylon near her nest to alert our staff not to park in the area. We're just trying to help, girlfriend!⁠

Whether they're chasing off much larger animals or loudly calling out their signature "kill-dee!" across the property, Killdeer always make their presence known.⁠

If you spot one strutting around the vineyard, give it a little space. Chances are there's a tiny family nearby they're working hard to protect ❤️🪺
