Everything is finally green in Powassan! Here’s what we love to forage around the farm this time of the year:
Spruce Tips 🌲
-high in vitamin A, C and antioxidants
-natural expectorant and antiseptic
-antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory
-enjoy fresh as a snack or in salads, fresh or dried in a tea or infuse in oil for skin remedies
Broad Leaf Plantain 🌱
-anti-inflammatory and antibacterial
-can be chewed and used as a poultice or for toothache, dried and used in teas or infused in oil for skin remedies
Violets and Violas 🌸
-leaves and flowers rich in vitamin A and C
-high mucilage content as well, excellent expectorant
-can me made into teas or syrups for dry cough and sore throat, excellent addition to salads
Dandelion (greens) 🍃
-high in vitamins A, C, and K as well as calcium, iron and fibre
-contain antioxidants and can help reduce inflammation
-can be eaten raw in salads or smoothies or cooked and enjoyed as a side
Yarrow 🌿
-anti-inflammatory, astringent and antimicrobial
-tea made from leaves and flowers can help with fevers and aid with digestion
-can be infused in oil for skin remedies
Dandelion (blossom) 🌼
-high in vitamins A, C, E and K and antioxidants
-excellent as a tea, can be eaten raw in salads, fried and made into fritters
-infused oil can be used for skin remedies
Lambs Quarters 🌿
-contains exceptional amounts of vitamin A and C, calcium and iron, as well as protein
-can be enjoyed raw in salads or cooked in place of spinach
Mullein 🌱
-rich in mucilage, helps to smooth the respiratory tract and act as an expectorant
-leaves can be used in teas for coughs or sore throats, or as a poultice for skin irritations
With a small amount of these 8 relatively common plants we’ll be able to make a years worth of first aid salve, a few months supply of cough and cold tea, and one meal’s worth of highly nutritious salad!
