Haskap berries were introduced into Canada from Russia and Japan in the 1950's. Credit is due to the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon for their role in breeding new tasty & hardy varieties.
Haskap bushes are cold tolerant to -40C.
The name haskap has been said to mean: berry of long life & good vision due to it's many health benefits.
Anything that can be made with blueberries and be made with haskaps.
There are some very tasty wines and ice creams being made within BC that we have enjoyed.

Good morning - thought maybe some ideas for baking with haskap berries might be in order.
Who would't like one of these treats with their morning coffee or for dessert ?
I like the look of the last one - lemon bars with haskap berries.

There is a special nutrient contained in haskap berries and this always bears repeating:
Cyanidin 3 Glucoside or C3G. This is a pigment found in fruits/berries that have dark skins.
This is a factor that makes haskaps a super fruit.
So eat up if you want to battle free radicals, get a dose of antioxidants, and generally just strengthen your immune system and bet anti inflammatory benefits.

Pollination is extremely important.
Mother Nature always has a solution. Bee pollination occurs when bees transfer pollen between plants. This pollen transfer fertilizes plants, allowing them to make seeds and reproduce. Also the wind can play a role as well by blowing pollen to a neighbouring bush.
We are fortunate to have a friend who puts his honey bees in our orchard during blossom time. These bees along with other pollinators can be heard in great numbers in the spring and it is truly a sight to behold and to listen to.

Brix and Berries

Brix is a unit of measure of sugar content in a berry. This is useful info for wine/juice makers.
We use a hand held, refractometer instruments for this. We aim for 14-16 in our berries.

Pruning

An important step in our orchard maintenance is pruning.
This is our most time consuming task but reaps great benefits. In the spring it gives us a chance to get rid of broken or damaged branches. By getting rid of these branches we open up the bush to light and air. We can also prune to assist with mechanical harvesting by clearing away any low growing or downward branches that our machine can't reach. Quality pruning shears are a MUST !

Hello - just been doodling and thought I'd share this with you.
Haskaps are sun kissed and purple. They can also stain! For clothing, I find that if you get it at right away your ok, if not try soda water. As for tables & kitchen counters I trust Bar Keepers Friend to get rid of any pink stubborn stains.

Dormant haskap berry bushes

Did you know that if you 'stress' a bush a little it will produce more fruit ?
The bush's instinct is to live so it will always put it's energy into ensuring it will live on through it's seed (fruit). A stressor can be a change of season, slightly under watering or animal/insect damage.

Hi There - we are the face of Cedar Creek Haskaps.
We are a husband (Marvin) & wife (Karen) team who started with a vision of growing healthy berries in our spare time. It turns out that it takes up ALOT of our time lol.

We've learned a lot along the way and have been very fortunate to have friends and family who have helped us out when we just couldn't do it all ourselves. We still think they are a terrific berry 😃
