Fully month out of school now and utterly blown away at how busy I am with equine therapy. I've had the opportunity to work with some wonderful horses and their owners - and getting tremendous feedback about the results. The best part (beyond the pleasure of spending time helping horses) ... knowing you've made the right choice!

School work - the yellow arrows show misalignments. Only 1 week left in my equine therapist program - the school I'm going to teaches a shorter version of the same program to vets and human chiropractors - can't believe how much I've learned!

Working on text for my new Equine Therapy website; once graduated I'll be offering chiropractic treatments, massage, acupressure, Reiki, Alpha-Stim® treatments and saddle fitting. I've just found out there are now insurance companies within Canada that offer Reiki as a paid benefit in their extended health care packages (for humans, of course). Reiki just got mainstream acceptance!

So enjoying my equine therapy course - we're 4 weeks in now - and it's been a pretty intense program of study. This week, at last, we've been allowed to touch horses - learning to feel for misalignments in the spine. All that classroom time is starting to come together as we get out amongst the ponies - under very close instruction, of course :)

Good Morning, everyone! We have some news - Damon and I have decided to move forward from our wonderful experience with BC Horse Vacations and into a new phase in life. In 1 month I'll be starting back to school (at this well-seasoned age!) to become an Equine Therapist, specializing in spinal manipulation and massage. While we're sad to say goodbye to this business where we've met so many delightful people and made so many friends, we are both looking forward to new and different adventures.
The only challenge is in parting with some of our horses; they are family, and as a herd we've gone to work together and climbed many a mountain and helped to create an awful lot of happy memories. But word of mouth is getting around - these horses have their own goodwill and friends; Logan and Tank both sold instantly. We haven't advertised, but people are interested and coming out to look. But if you know of a wonderful home looking for a GOOD horse, please put our name forward! And let's stay in touch - I can't bear to lose contact with all the folks who've found their way into our hearts over the years.

Had a wonderful snow ride today with a friend and her daughter - the girl's pretty Appy pony broke trail the whole way, with snow up past her knees. Pony's choice... she said she had to be out front :) The adult's long legged beasties were in complete agreement with the arrangement!

Finally, science is catching up with what those of us who spend much time with animals have always known - animals are conscious beings! Way to go, Stephen Hawking for lending your revered name to this proclamation.

Finally, this summer, those of us “eccentric” enough to learn from horses and other animals received a boost from an unexpected source. On July 7, 2012, during the Francis Crick Memorial Conference held at the University of Cambridge, a prominent group of international scientists publically proclaimed that animals are more than instinctual bio-machines. Based on decades of physiological and behavioral experiments with multiple species, The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness stated “unequivocally” that “non-human animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of consciousness states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviors. Consequently, the weight of evidence indicates that humans are not unique in possessing the neurological substrates that generate consciousness.” The document, signed in the presence of Stephen Hawking no less, acknowledged that “neural networks aroused during affective states in humans are also critically important for generating emotional behaviors in animals.” This includes “all mammals and birds, and many other creatures, including octopuses.”
