As some of you know, we have been having problems with ravens hurting our hens and stealing their eggs. We have a rooster in with our retired hens, and the ravens have been leaving them alone. We are going to be putting a rooster in with our regular layers for protection, and moving them to a more permanent coop. They will still have access to rotational grazing and we are building them a .1 acre chicken garden where they can hide and scratch to their hearts delight. I will forward pictures as we get everything set up!

This is a shout out to Jude, the hero of the chicken coop, rescuer of hens in distress, and bouncer of raccoons. Jude rescued a hen last night that decided to sleep in the brush beside the coop instead of safe inside. A raccoon found her, and Jude found the raccoon. Our sweet hen had a few feathers missing, but is safe and sound. Livestock guardian dogs are an essential part of our farm and most of the time Jude will lazily curl up in his favourite spot…until he is needed. Then he is magic.

This is our new ram! He came to us from Cedar and he’s just settling in with his new buddy. He’s a very handsome boy!

Why is this lamb in my laundry room??? We found out one of our lambs had barber pole worms. Apparently, this is a common sheep worm on the island that causes severe anemia in sheep. All the sheep have been treated and coming back to normal...and this little lady enjoyed three days of air conditioning in her makeshift laundry room stall. ❤️

The first year of a layer chicken’s life they produce a massive number of eggs. This is a picture showing the massive size difference between eggs from the same age group, and breed, of chickens! Believe it or not the small one was a double yolk and the big one was entirely normal! In their first year of life chickens produce more eggs then they will over the same time period as they age. This produces different sized eggs, double yolks, and occasional red spots in the yolk as their immature systems rev up production.

First day for the baby chicks out in the pasture. Our LGD Jude is making darn sure his charges are put in their houses correctly. We had to put visual barriers between the chicks so they weren’t trying to cluster back together. Tomorrow those will come out and the chicks will be settled. Lots of yummy grass, lots of walking and catching bugs…all the great things for a healthy chicken to do.
