We have a 3 generation picture here. Honey is I believe 6 years old. Her offspring, Duchess born in November 2024. Along with her 1st calf, Fergie, born May 29/2026. So cool to see this full circle. Honey did have a bull calf in February, Marty, yet he moved to another farm 2 weeks ago. He’s doing excellent.

When you’ve raised cows yourself, fed them, bred them, watched them calve, worried about them, and cared for them year after year, they stop feeling like just livestock. You know their personalities. You recognize them when they walk toward you. You’ve invested time, money, work—and a piece of your heart.

And then making the decision to send them for that one bad day, can feel incredibly heavy, even when you know it’s part of why you raised them in the first place.

You can hold two feelings at the same time:

* You can love and respect those cows.
* And you can still choose to have them processed for beef.

Those things aren’t contradictory.

In fact, the fact that I’m struggling with it probably says something good about the way I’ve cared for them. They weren’t neglected or treated as disposable. They had a life on the farm where they were fed, bred, handled and cared for.
I’m giving them a purpose that is connected to the farm and the food I’m producing.

And honestly, the first time—or even the tenth time—sending in an animal I’ve personally raised, it can still hurt.

Tonight, I tell myself, it’s okay to feel sad about it. I don’t have to convince myself that I shouldn’t care.
Caring is part of being a good livestock owner. ❤️🐂
