Well, that’s a wrap on garlic sales for us. We would like to thank all our faithful customers who have been buying garlic from us for years and all the new people we met this year. Since this was our last year selling, many people bought some garlic to try growing it for themselves.
We’re passing on a few tips that we have learned along the way. Obviously growing produce varies from garden to garden but here’s some basic tips.
1. It’s time to get your garlic beds ready now. W**d and turn over the soil if it is compacted. We add manure and alfalfa pellets to add nutrients to the soil.
2. We plant at the end of October and apparently there’s extra benefits to planting on a full moon!
3. We add mulch in early December to protect from very cold temperatures, add extra nutrients and keep the weeds down.
4. When the garlic is about 4 inches high we fertilize with liquid fish fertilizer and repeat two more times at 3 week intervals.
5. Be careful not to overwater your garlic.
6. Pick the scapes when they begin to curl and are still tender and snap off.
7. We stop watering when we harvest the scapes.
8. Harvest when about 2/3 of the leaves have dried leaving only 1/3 green leaves
9. Hang to dry out of direct sunlight in an area with good air circulation. We use fans to keep the air moving. We hang for about a month to make sure the garlic is fully cured and will store well. You can hang for less if you’re using it right away.
10. Store garlic is a cool, dry location.
11. Eat lots of garlic and save enough to plant for next year!
