We’ve been focused on our layers and are so incredibly happy with the current laying mix that we’re flipping back to a good dual purpose meat bird. We eat and sell a lot of chicken (and broth! always have powdered chicken bone broth in stock) and have been researching a more self sustainable method without compromising on taste. This French culinary classic bird is becoming more popular in North America and we can raise them with our layers until month prior to finish/breeding. We’re flying in this beautiful line from back East and will be one of the first farms on the West Coast with these genetics that they’ve been carefully developing and crossing for the last decade.

Tis the season to start hardening off tomatoes. It’s been a cool start to the spring but we’ve been monitoring soil temps. Soil temp (not ambient) needs to stay above 10 degrees Celsius at night. Even if the ambient temperature drops below 10, it’s usually not for long enough to drop the soil temperature. We really like these soil thermometers! Check them first thing in the morning and when you get multiple above 10 mornings, you’re ready to start planting those tom’s!

Another incubator load! Day olds $8, off heat chicks $14 (straight run).

This year’s chicks are a phenomenal heritage “barnyard” mix of top egg laying breeds (summer and winter! We’ve been getting 3 dozen average a day from the ladies lately. Come spring, watch out!). The breeds were carefully selected and we brought in a lot of new heritage purebred lines last year from excellent stock across Canada. Previous year’s rooters were purebred Americuana’s (with the bluest blue egg gene we’ve seen - no hints of green tones). This year’s roosters are purebred Lavender Orpington’s. Our ladies consist of Gold and Silver Laced Wyandottes (purebred line we flew in last year, will be Wyandotte over the lavender Orpington roosters), Cream Crested Legbars (purebred brought in last year - over the Lav Orpington rooters were expecting some beautiful olive green shades), Austrolorp (3 generations), Lavender Orpington (purebreds last year from unrelated rooter lines), Easter Eggers (Americuana’s - most lay olive with a few laying blue. Expect to see extreme green olive shades from these ladies with high chance of blues), and Leghorn (3 generations - rooter was part leghorn, part high bread brown. Amazing layers and feed to egg ratio conversion).
We’re expecting some amazing olive eggers from this batch, but more importantly phenemonal layers through summer and winter. Chance of any colour of the 🌈 for eggs (even pink!). Ladies are extremely friendly and curious (our off heat goes straight to the main coop with no issues).
Located on Quadra Island but will deliver between Campbell River and Comox Valley. Will deliver w/min order and small delivery fee from Comox Valley - Ladysmith.
