On June 28, 1966, General Motors held a big press conference to name their new pony car.. the direct rival to Ford’s wildly popular Mustang.
When journalists asked what “Camaro” actually meant, Chevrolet representatives gave the cheekiest answer ever: “A small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.”
That one savage marketing line helped set the tone for the muscle-car wars. The first Camaros hit showrooms in September 1966 as 1967 models and quickly became iconic muscle cars.
Still one of the best-known car-launch stories ever.
