Spring has a way of turning pages—of trading heavy layers for lighter ones, and hurried moments for slower, sun-drenched afternoons. But some things are worth holding onto, no matter the season. Like a good book. Like a well-made vest. This rose-coloured vintage wool piece isn’t just a nod to the past—it’s a quiet rebellion against the disposable. Paired with a thoughtful read and a curious mind, it’s the kind of outfit that doesn’t chase trends—it outlives them.

Wrap your holidays in a little Scandinavian magic ✨
In Nordic folklore, nisse are the whimsical, wise little guardians of the homestead—sometimes helpful, sometimes mischievous, but always full of character. Dating back to pre-Christian traditions, nisse were believed to live in barns and farm buildings, watching over animals and protecting the family through the long winter.
Legend says that if you treated your nisse kindly—especially with a bowl of warm Christmas porridge—they would bless the farm with prosperity. Ignore them, and you might find your tools mysteriously misplaced or your chores undone!
Our hand-carved nisse figures, set in front of a vintage winter plate, capture the charm and warmth of those old stories. Every piece is unique and full of personality, making them perfect for anyone who loves whimsical, one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts.

There’s something timeless about a red barn—whether it rises from the snowy prairies of Western Canada or the rolling countryside of Scandinavia.
In both places, farmers chose the iconic red paint not only for beauty, but for practicality: early Scandinavian barns were treated with natural pigments—often iron oxide—that created a deep, protective red. When Scandinavian immigrants settled across the Canadian West, they brought their farming traditions, craftsmanship, and love of that bold, welcoming colour.
Today at HolmeHus Antiques & The Farm With The Good Food, our own red barn carries that same heritage—where European antiques, vintage Scandinavian charm, and the warmth of Christmas Hygge meet rural Alberta life. Discover Hygge, Open Daily from 10-5 ❄️❤️✨

Wrapped in a sweater knit from real Scandinavian wool—a craft shaped by centuries of northern living. Across Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands, wool was more than material; it was survival. Families spun yarn from hardy sheep breeds that evolved to withstand bitter winds, and every region developed its own patterns—like the iconic Norwegian selburose star or the dense Icelandic lopi yokes—that blended warmth, symbolism, and identity.
Knitting circles were once the heart of community life. Women gathered through the dark winters, spinning, stitching, and sharing stories—creating not only garments but moments of comfort and togetherness. This is the oldest form of hygge: the simple, steady warmth of hands at work, the quiet joy of making something meant to last, and the feeling of belonging that comes from shared tradition.
At Christmas Hygge in our Red Barn, we honour that heritage. Among antiques, vintage finds, and goods made by local artisans, you’ll find the same spirit of craftsmanship and coziness that has defined Scandinavian culture for generations. It’s a celebration of warmth—of wool, of history, of community—and of finding comfort in both the old and the handmade.
Cozy traditions, carried across continents and generations. ❄️🧶✨

Step into a little slice of Scandinavia right here in Red Deer County. ❄️✨
As the season settles in and the days grow shorter, we’re reminded of an old Scandinavian tradition: creating hygge—that feeling of deep comfort, warmth, and connection that brings light to the winter months. Historically, hygge wasn’t about décor or trends; it was about survival, togetherness, and the simple rituals that made long winters feel welcoming. Families gathered close around the fire, wrapped in hand-knit wool, sharing stories, homemade food, and moments of peaceful stillness.
Today, hygge has grown into a modern celebration of slowing down and cherishing the small things: the glow of a candle, the softness of a handmade blanket, a meal shared with people you love, or the joy of discovering something crafted with care.
Here on the farm, we try to honour both the old and the new.
From traditional Scandinavian knitting and folk designs to classic European china and locally made, farm-sourced goods, every corner of our little red barn is filled with pieces chosen for the warmth they bring—objects with history, soul, and stories woven into them.
Whether you’re searching for a meaningful gift, a touch of heritage for your home, or simply a quiet moment of holiday magic, we hope our shop offers you a place to pause and breathe in the beauty of the season.
Come discover your own hygge this winter. 🤍🌾✨

✨ From Summer’s First Fair to the Season’s Last Show ✨

As late summer settles into the prairies, we’re reminded of the traditions that once marked this turning of the season — the country fair. The very first fair in Alberta dates back to 1888, when farmers, ranchers, and townsfolk gathered to share the fruits of their labour, compare stock, and celebrate rural craftsmanship. These fairs were about more than ribbons and trophies — they were about pride of ownership, community, and the artistry of farm life.

Horse shows were at the very heart of these gatherings — polished tack, braided manes, and gleaming horses moving with precision. They weren’t about rodeo bravado, but about presentation, patience, and partnership between horse and rider. The ribbons, buckles, and pins weren’t just prizes; they became heirlooms, reminders of long summer days when the fairgrounds hummed with excitement and neighbours gathered to celebrate rural life.

As we move from summer into fall, we hold onto those traditions — the harvest, the pride of a well-kept farm, and the simple joys of coming together
