As the weather cools down and fall goes into full swing, one question comes up more than any other in our store and at our demos: do honey bees hibernate?

The answer is actually no! Unlike bumblebees, a honey bee colony stays active all winter. Instead of sleeping, they have a particular survival trick: they form a tight "winter cluster" around their queen inside the hive and flex their flight muscles to generate heat. By shivering together and trading places between the cold outer edge and the warm center, they can keep the inside of the cluster at a cozy 90°F. All that heating takes energy, which is why they work through the summer storing up honey to feed their winter furnace! 🐝❄️

Featured in this picture is our flavourful buckwheat honey. Buckwheat honey gets its distinctive hue from the nectar of white buckwheat flowers, which are rich in natural pigments and minerals.

Unlike lighter floral honeys, it has a deeper colour—ranging from a dark amber to almost black—and a much bolder flavour. Instead of a mild sweetness, it carries a robust taste, sometimes said to be similar to molasses, date syrup, or malt syrup. Because of its stronger taste, it works exceptionally well stirred into oatmeal, in baked goods, or used in recipes that call for a sweetener with a bit more depth.

It's time for another bee fact! In these photos, one of our honey bees pauses over an aster flower. Packed tightly onto her hind legs are bright yellow nubs called pollen baskets.

Pollen is a hive's primary source of protein and essential fats. She is gathering valuable resources to help her colony survive the colder months ahead. As she gathers, tiny loose grains rub off onto neighbouring asters. This cross-pollination allows the flowers to reproduce, so this bee stocking her home's pantry helps keep our garden alive and growing!

In this video, one of our honey bees helps pollinate an aster flower. If you look closely at her hind legs, you’ll spot bright yellow pockets—her pollen baskets (or corbiculae).

As she brushes against the aster's center, fine pollen dust clings to her body. She meticulously grooms herself mid-flight, packing those microscopic grains into tight, portable golden pockets to carry back to the hive.
