Five years ago, we packed everything we owned into the back of a truck and drove toward something we couldn’t fully see yet.
No guarantees.
No perfect plan.
Just conviction.
The first photo is that moment, loading up, snow on the ground, tools and pieces of a future crammed into a pickup bed. That wasn’t a “fresh start.” That was a burn-the-ships decision. We weren’t visiting Nova Scotia. We were committing.
The second photo? Raw land. No driveway. No gardens. No buildings. Just wind, alders and possibility. Most people would see emptiness. We saw responsibility. If this land was going to feed us, shelter us, and shape us, it was on us to build it.
The third, fourth and fifth photo is where we are now. Not finished. Not polished. Just moving forward.
Five years later, Humble Roots Homestead isn’t a dream, it’s a living, breathing reality. Trees planted. Soil turned. Lessons learned the hard way. Seasons of doubt. Seasons of growth. Still adjusting. Still building. Still earning every inch.
This milestone isn’t about “arriving.”
It’s about endurance.
We didn’t move here to escape work. We moved here to choose it. To build something real with our hands. To grow food. To create independence. To raise something that outlives us. And to grow a forest that will be enjoyed when we are no longer here.
Five years in Nova Scotia.
Five years of Humble Roots.
And we’re just getting started.
Here’s to the next five, stronger, wiser, and even more rooted. Happy Valentine’s Day. ❤️.
