Wednesday October 8th saw us finish up the last field!

In the three days since then, we took a combine over and helped my brother Michael finish up his harvest. They wrapped up over there around noon today. Since then, it’s been a bit of a mad rush to get all the equipment tucked away before tomorrow’s storm arrives. 🌧️ ❄️

Hopefully, the white stuff doesn’t stick around for too long. We’re not ready for winter yet!

Yesterday was just a no-good, very bad day. 😳😬💸💸💸 With this wreck, we are down to one combine to finish up our last 200ish acres of straight cut canola. The frosty nights (-9 felt like -15 last night) have made for some short combining days this week.

What a difference eight days makes!

Since my last post, we:
- knocked off the last of our wheat in two days
- picked up the few acres of swathed canola that we had this year (minus the test plots where we are waiting for the rep to come out for weighing and sampling)
- cut steady in standing canola
- seeded about 650 acres of fall rye for next year

We are about 70% complete and should be finished up in a week if all goes well. Grateful for the beautiful week of sunny weather! ☀️

We haven’t turned a wheel since September 10th and we’ve only had 7 days or partial days of harvest the whole month. There’s been 2-3 inches of rain throughout the farm plus many foggy mornings. We’re sitting at over 50% complete with just a couple quarters of wheat left to go and then canola should be smooth sailing. 🤞🏼

The forecast is looking up—we are ready to roll and get this harvest finished!

Day 9 of harvest! We finished rye today and are sitting at about 20% complete. The rye was tough slugging with short days due to high moisture and a big crop; we ended up swathing it all and picking up windrows. The grain was finally dry by the time we got to the last field. 😂 Thankfully the weather has turned the corner from being cloudy, cool, and foggy to beautiful, hot sunny days this week.

I earned my shower today after blowing off the combines when we finished the rye.

Harvest, Day 3, saw us finish the peas. We moved on to our fall rye but the moisture was unfortunately a little too high...

Harvest, Day 3, saw us finish the peas. We moved on to our fall rye but the moisture was unfortunately a little too high to start putting it in the bin today. Stay tuned for Plan B (wait it out) or Plan C (don’t sell the swather!)
