People keep asking me what I'm growing this year, have I found a new farm, how are the gardens going....
And the answer?
Nothing.
No I didn't.
I have no gardens.
I am realizing how much I miss my hands in the dirt, everyday, connecting to the earth with such depth and meaning.
But this is grief.
Not grief over losing someone close to me.
Grief from losing a dream I poured 8 years of my life into, building with my hands, day in day out. Bringing joy to the lives of others through food.
Prior to starting the farm in 2017, we converted the entire backyard into growing space. Every inch we could. Ten 4'x16' raised beds. Small greenhouse. Tiered gardens on every slope. Chicken coop. Huge compost system. We were featured in the first ever Hills to Valley Garden Tour.
Three years into farming, we ripped it all out and gave the yard back to the kids. π€·ββοΈ
So now, there are no gardens.
But! One other thing we did in 2015 was build a Food is Free Garden at the top of our property, along the road. Filled it with all kinds of food for people to harvest for free whenever they want.
Although this garden hasn't been tended to in 9 years, it is still a perennial herb bed proudly boasting sage, oregano, lavender, yarrow and comfrey.
So I harvested herb bundles and gifted them to a bunch of unsuspecting people and reminded myself just how good it feels to share life with people.
So that's my message for today.
Never forget how simple things in life, like sharing something you care about with good people, can make the day brighter and your heart fuller π€
