🟠 September 30 marks Truth & Reconciliation Day in Canada, a time to reflect on the tragic history and multi-generational harm caused by the residential school system. We don orange shirts to honour the survivors and those who never returned home, but what other meaningful actions can settlers take to further awareness and self-education, not just today, but every day?
1. Participate in a Truth and Reconciliation Day gathering in your town or city. Listen. Learn.
2. Familiarize yourself with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action.
3. Explore W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council’s Resources for Settlers at: wsanec.com/learn-settlers
4. Dive into works of Indigenous literature, music, art and film.
5. Enroll in the University of Alberta’s “Indigenous Canada” free online course.
6. Follow IG accounts to broaden your feed, such as , as well as the many Indigenous content creators, entrepreneurs and influencers online.
7. Tune into special programming across CBC TV, Radio Canada, and APTN.
8. Support Indigenous-founded businesses – many can be found at: indigenousbusinessdirectoryvi.com
9. Learn about and support Indigenous Protected & Conserved Areas.
10. Donate what you can to organizations such as National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, Native Women's Association of Canada, and Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS), amongst others.
