Coming up on May 9th the last workshop of the spring series here in Bayside all about growing edible and medicinal mushrooms!

We not only be talking about how to grow them, but what functions different types of mushrooms play in the soil, in nature and even in our bodies.

This is always a very popular topic and the big bonus is that every participant gets to inoculate their very own mushroom log to take home :)

Had the absolute pleasure of hosting the NBCC level 4 landscape horticulture class on Monday for a farm tour and a hands on group project.

We replaced my old worn out deer fence with 1300 feet of new UV protected fence and then I spent the day yesterday clearing and revamping some sections of the electric fence that runs on the outside of the fence.

Growing food in deer country is no joke and this should relieve a bit of the pressure that the resident deer put on me this season.

Thanks Jessica and crew for coming and good luck on your exams on friday!

At the gardening workshop this weekend we got talking about preserving the harvest because that's a big part of gardening when you take the next step of just eating fresh out of the garden and really pushing to grow more and more of your own food to eat year round.

There seemed to be interest in a workshop specifically focused on preserving when we get to fall, stay tuned for that!

yesterday with the weather outside being cold and rainy, I took advantage of having the woodstove running and got a bunch of things canned and preserved for the upcoming summer season. All my onions were starting to go soft so I used them all up, feels so good to make sure all last year's work doesn't wind up in the compost pile

Next workshop coming up in 2 weeks is all about Perennial Edible Landscaping!
Growing food doesn't always look like rows of annual plants that need to be grown from seed or purchased every spring, with perennials you can plant once and harvest for years! Way less work, and more food over the life time of the plant.
As with all my workshops I like to give options for every size yard or backyard space. Fruit trees are a great option for folks with a bigger yard, but there are dwarf trees, shrubs of all kinds as well as herb and ground cover layers that can yield all kinds of food and medicine for years in smaller spaces.
There are perennial greens that come back every spring for salads or herbs for teas. Berries are super easy to grow and some can thrive even in deep shade or in containers on a sunny patio, they also always blow the grocery store offerings out of the water in terms of taste and health benefits.
Bonus points that lots of these plants are great for local pollinators and beautiful either when in flower in spring or have unique fall foliage.
As always, workshops are held at my farm in Bayside from 10 am until 1 pm and the cost is $50 per person. To register or any other questions please email [email protected]

After taking a year off I am very happy to announce that I will be offering workshops again at the farm this winter/spring!
Teaching these workshops has historically been a wonderful way to bring like minded people together to learn and connect with each other while also spreading some of the knowledge that I have gleaned over my life as a farmer's son and then onto my own journey into the realm of permaculture/regenerative agriculture and off-grid homesteader.
The topics have been chosen to be applicable for the season and to set the participants up for a successful growing season in 2026 and beyond. I really hope to help anyone who is interested to cut down on their grocery bill increase their attachment to nature through gardening.
February 28th - Pruning and maintenance of abandoned apple trees. NB is full of wild and abandoned apple trees that have all the potential of giving us high quality, abundant fruit with a little care and maintenance. We will also cover the basics of grafting cultivar apples onto wild apple seedlings and pruning cultivar fruit trees
March 28th - Edible Perennial Landscaping. Landscaping around your property can be beautiful, functional and cost saving in the long term with edible (and medicinal) perennials. They can be a haven for pollinators, native birds and some are even tolerant of the local deer population.
April 11th – Backyard Gardening. In this session we will cover how to start a garden and how to make it more productive year after year saving you money on your grocery bill. We will cover soil health, plant selection, till vs no till, companion planting, compost making, seed starting, how to avoid burnout, season extension and lots more.
May 9th - Growing Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms for your health and the health of the soil ecosystem. I will show you how to inoculate your landscape with edible wine cap mushrooms and how to grow shiitake and oyster mushrooms on logs. Every participant will take an oyster mushroom log home with them 🙂
Workshops are $50 each or all 4 for $150 and will run from 10 am until 1 pm in person at my farm in Bayside.

Prrrrresenting the schedule for winter workshops here at the farm!
I decided to scale it down to the 3 most popular topics this year in my ongoing battle to work out some sort of farm/work/life balance. All workshops will run from 10 am until 1 pm and will cost $50/person. I will also sell the 3 workshop package for $120, any further questions can be sent to [email protected]
Pruning abandoned apple trees is always a great workshop to empower people to get out there and do some work to the apple trees that are already so prevalent in our landscape. These "wild" trees may be overgrown and unruly, but with a little love and attention and persistence over a few years, they may be brought back to healthy and productive trees.
In this workshop I will also be talking about some basic grafting techniques as well. The beauty of this workshop is touring our homestead and looking at examples of apple trees that I have been working on for 8 years and the progress (and mistakes!) that have been made.
Growing Food, Medicine and Habitat is a topic very close to my heart; with food prices rising and quality declining, there has never been a more important time to grow some of your own food. I have been working on transforming this old cow pasture into food and medicinal gardens since moving here in 2016. There are examples of market style gardens, home gardens and permaculture inspired medicinal and food forests.
Not only growing food for humans, but also fostering a diverse habitat for insects and other beings transforms a garden into part of the ecosystem. Insects play a vital role for pollination, pest predation and beautification of the landscape. Mixing annual with perennial plants also moves the garden in succession and leads to less work and more yields over time.
Growing Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms is one of the first workshops I even attended at the Falls Brook Centre back in 2012ish and have been teaching here every year since 2020. WE grow shiitake, oyster and wine cap mushrooms here on the farm as well as forage for chanterelles, oysters and lobster mushrooms.
This workshop is a mix of classroom with a history of mushrooms and their vital role in the underground ecosystem, nutrient cycling and even plant communication. There will also be demonstrations of wine cap bed creation as well as a hands on oyster log inoculation, each participant will get to take their log home 🙂
These workshops will all be taught through a permaculture lens which is a system based off of natures teachings as well as indigenous knowledge throughout the world. Permaculture teaches us to integrate rather than segregate and all these topics and everything that is done here on the farm works towards being more in line with natural systems.
We are proud to be doing this land restoration work while recognizing that we reside on the traditional and unceded land of the Peskotomuhkati Nation.

I've decided to add a fall workshop this year to the educational series here at the farm. I get asked all the time "garden all done for the season?" and honestly at this point there is no real "done" only changing of tasks and shifting of gears.

Fall and winter are actually really busy seasons getting everything squared away, fixing up infrastructure, organizing indoor and outdoor workspaces and taking the time to reflect on the growing season that has just passed while dreaming about the new year on the horizon.

This workshop will touch on all these tasks as well as lots of food preservation tips and tricks from the root cellar, freezer and kitchen. Pickles, sauces, jams, dehydrated and fermented foods keep us eating our harvest all year round and our herbal allies keep the wintertime colds at bay.

Come learn with us about how to make this "downseason" your most productive ever! cost of the workshop is $50/person and you can get more info by emailing [email protected]

We are once again offering trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials for sale!

These plants are all grown here on the farm in living soil with a focus on healthy root systems. Fall is the best time of year to get plants into the ground to establish root systems before growth in spring!

These plants have all been grown in our climate and can handle NB winters without protection. Adding variety to your landscape or garden will not only provide food and medicine for the human occupants, but also add habitat for pollinators and other beneficial insects.

We are not set up to ship at the present time, so all plants will need to be picked up at the farm in Bayside or arrangements can be made for meet ups in St Andrews.

We have new visitors to our gardens each year and I love taking photos and sending them to insect identifying extraordinaire Mischa Giasson and finding out what wild creatures are taking advantage of the ever evolving ecosystem in our gardens.

This year we have a couple of badass looking wasps that have been loving the milkweed.

First one is the great black wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) who is a little camera shy so pardon the crappy photo.

2nd pic is a couple of great golden digger wasps (Sphex ichneumoneus)

Permaculture and friends who are even bigger nature dorks than me for the win!
