Coffee at 6 a.m. The kids' water bottles. A load of towels. The dishwasher you'd rather not replace early. Water runs through most of it, and you almost never think about it.

That's the case for treating it properly. A softener reduces the minerals that leave scale in a kettle and stiffness in laundry. Filtration reduces what affects taste and odour at the tap. Which one your home needs depends on what's actually coming out of it — which is the part worth finding out first.

One thing worth adding to the back-to-school list.

Backpack, shoes, lunch bag, the supply list that somehow needs a specific brand of binder. Water bottle usually makes the list too — what goes in it, less often.

Kids drink more water when it tastes better, and a filled bottle from a filtered tap beats a fountain at the end of a long hallway. Cheaper than cases of bottled water, and one less thing in the recycling bin by Friday.

One more long weekend to go, and if you're hosting, water is the thing nobody thinks about until the pitcher comes out.

Niagara's utilities do good work getting water to the tap. Treated water can still be hard water, though, and like most water drawn from the Great Lakes ours runs hard — spotty glassware, cloudy ice, tap water that doesn't taste like much. A reverse osmosis (RO) system reduces what's behind the taste, so a glass from the tap holds up next to anything you'd buy by the case.

Here's the honest version. A purifier isn't a fix for a wet basement. Water extraction, drying, and proper cleanup come first. But once the fans are running and things are drying out, a good filtration unit handles the particulate and odour side of the process. That's the gap we're trying to help with.
