Did you know we have lost over 85% of the world’s oyster reefs? 😮

Conservationists are fighting back with some incredible marine engineering to bring them back. Here is how they do it and why it matters for our planet:

How Reefs Are Rebuilt

🐚 Cultch Planting: Dropping old shells and rocks to create a solid foundation.

🔬 Spat-on-Shell: Growing baby oysters in labs, then planting them in the wild.

🧱 Reef Structures: Deploying concrete structures and 3D-printed tiles to stop erosion.

Why It Matters:

💧 Natural Water Filters: A single oyster can filter up to 190 litres of water a day!

🐟 Fish Hotels: Rebuilt reefs provide critical food and homes for hundreds of marine species.

🛡️ Storm Shields: These living breakwaters absorb wave energy and protect our coastlines.

*Oysters have not grown and lived naturally in the Bay of Fundy in over 3000 years but reef restoration is very important around the rest of the worlds oceans!*
