We passed one of our first seasonal milestones last week by completing the first big planting project of the year!

This planting project transformed Hoophouse 3 into its Spring Phase. Hoophouse 3 is our largest growing structure on the farm, providing the first big volume of new crops each year. Though it's unheated, this hoophouse can be planted as soon as the deepest cold of winter breaks - hopefully that has truly happened now!

For Hoophouse 3, we chose varieties that are cold hardy, highly valued in CSA boxes and at market, provide variety at a time of year when diversity is low, and grow quickly. Everything needs to reach maturity and be out by May 1st, to make way for the Summer Phase of fruiting crops. So, we planted salad mix, arugula, beets (for bunching), dill, cilantro, green onions, radish, and pak choi.

After removing w**d suppression tarps and adding compost, we brought the tractor in to incorporate it into the soil. We marked beds and planting lines, then it was all hands on deck to plant this space. Planting finished on Friday - and just in time! With cold nights this week, we're trusting they have had just enough time to recover from transplant shock to handle those conditions.

Our next spring plantings are scheduled for the next 2-3 weeks, but we anticipate those being more challenging. They'll be going into our field tunnels, which are both the least insulated of our structures and waterlogged from snow melt at the moment! Field tunnels do warm up a lot when the sun is out, so were crossing our fingers for some clearer days ahead.šŸŒ±ā˜€

2025 was a challenging year weather-wise. A cold spring extended longer than usual, summer was extremely dry and unrelentingly hot, then in December the freeze was earlier than expected. Our main irrigation pond ran completely dry and we expanded it to help avoid running out of water in the future. We moved out of the old seedling greenhouse (where we were bursting at the seams) and started figuring out the quirks and workflow in our new seedling area. We finally graduated from hand seeding every single tray, to using a drop seeder. We finished installing and started using biomass boiler and heat storage tank which has made heating the greenhouse less labour intensive and much more energy efficient. After almost 10 years of using our Kubota, we bought a second tractor. The list of changes and challenges could go on and on!

Thank you to everyone who supported the farm last year by buying vegetables or plants, reading updates and emails, saying hello at the market or farm pickup, coming to the open house or music festival. We are very, very grateful.

This week we're harvesting some of the first crops planted in 2026! Mustard greens (winter salad mix) and arugula we transplanted mid-January are ready and we're eager to work on some harvest!

It’s been so cold and dark the last few weeks that everything is re-growing slowly and there hasn't been as much to harvest as in past winters. In addition to (of course) wishing we had more fresh greens available, we’d really love more work to do! At this point we’ve started to run out of our "Save That for Winter When We Have More Time" projects. What a contrast this is to our main-season when there’s more work than hours in the day! But the truth is, right now, we’re relieved to have a few more things on the go and some ā€˜regular’ work to do.

In addition to greens, we are bunching and clearing out radishes from Hoophouse 1 this week. In summertime, radishes take about 4 weeks to grow from seed to harvest. These radishes, on the other hand, were seeded in December and taken more than twice as long to grow.

Low light conditions reduce how much energy plants can make and sometimes cause them grow long, lanky stems as they stretch toward the light. Cold weather slows nutrient uptake and metabolic activity. With odds stacked against them, there was definitely a risk these wouldn't work out. We’re glad we took the chance on them! It feels great to have something new on hand.

We are also happy to see our seedling greenhouse looking full again with tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, onions, beets, pac choi, herbs, and lettuce all well underway for spring plantings. This week, we’ll be starting cucumbers too! 🌱

Winter radish is here!

This year our lineup includes purple, red, and white daikon, watermelon radish, and black Spanish radish. These are all grown using the same method: direct-seeded in 3-row beds, watered for germination, covered with insect netting, and w**ded 2–3 times using our tractor-mounted cultivator (about a week apart for each cultivation). Once they reach a minimum size, we begin harvesting just what we need for the week. But now that they’ve reached their maximum size, we’re eager to get them out of the field and into cold storage.

We had held back on harvesting them because of how warm it's been this fall. We've been waiting for the magic that happens when these radishes experience a little bit of cold and go from sharply spicy, to sweet and crunchy. Their longevity in our cold storage is also improved- meaning we'll have them available for more of the winter.

For harvest we twisted off the greens from every single radish and store them unwashed in pallet bins. We have tried to use our harvester in the past, but this avoids bruising. They go into our coolers and are kept as close to 0°C as possible without freezing. Then, long after a hard frost sets in for the season, we’ll continue harvesting what we need each week—just from the cooler instead of the field.

So this year, if you see a particularly large winter radish in your order or at our market stand, you'll know it's because of those additional warm days we enjoyed this fall!

It feels like summer again this week! Here are some favourites from an awesome season with our summer crew.
