🌱 𝐀 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐠𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝.

As we filled each hole, we noticed something incredible…

Almost every gopher mound was full of worm castings. 🪱

Not just a few here and there — mound after mound of rich, crumbly soil created by earthworms. A sure sign that there’s a lot of life happening beneath our feet.

𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐭. 🌱

It’s a living ecosystem filled with microbes, fungi, insects, and worms all working together to build fertility and feed the plants above.

These lower fields near the creek are some of the most fertile on the ranch, and it’s encouraging to see the soil biology thriving. 🌿

Now if we could just get the gophers, pocket gophers, and weeds under control, we’d really be laughing. 😂

But that’s farming.

Every challenge solved seems to reveal the next one waiting around the corner.

And honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. ❤️

As part of our commitment to honoring the animals we raise and using as much of each animal as possible, we are looking for someone who may be interested in 𝟐 𝐜𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 from our upcoming harvest.

These hides would be suitable for:

• Tanning
• Leather making
• Rug making
• Traditional crafts and projects

Rather than seeing them go to waste, we’d love to see them go to someone who appreciates working with hides and natural materials.

Being off-grid and powered by solar, freezer space is limited, so we’re unable to keep additional hides ourselves.

🌱 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐟 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐥?

Today I was pulling alfalfa, red clover, dandelion, thistle, and dock from the garden and admiring their incredible root systems.

Many of these plants are considered “weeds,” but they may also be nature’s way of responding to compacted or imbalanced soil.

🌿 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩:
• Break up compacted ground
• Improve water infiltration
• Bring minerals up from deep in the soil
• Feed soil biology
• Add organic matter when roots die back

🌿 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞:
• Alfalfa
• Red Clover
• Dandelion
• Dock
• Burdock
• Thistle

…are often some of nature’s deepest-rooted pioneers.

That doesn’t mean I want them taking over my garden! 😄 But I do find it fascinating that many of the plants we fight the hardest may be helping prepare the soil for what comes next.

Sometimes the weeds are the symptom.

Our pigs are raised right here at Pend d’Oreille River Ranch using organic practices, with access to both pasture and forest where they can root, forage, explore, and simply be pigs.

𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 🌱

Running a regenerative ranch, raising a family, caring for animals, stewarding land, gardening, outschooling, building programs, and trying to keep all the plates spinning is… a lot for one human sometimes.

Our garden is flourishing and everything is ready to grow, but I simply don’t have enough hours in the day to keep up with all the weeding, planting, harvesting, and garden care on my own right now.

I would love to find one or two people locally who:• enjoy gardening• love being outside• want to learn• want to spend time on the land• or simply want to help a family trying to build something meaningful
