Pesticides kill pests. That is true, but they also kill the organisms that prevent pest outbreaks in the first place.
Healthy soil biology produces predatory nematodes, beneficial fungi, and bacterial communities that suppress pest populations naturally. When pesticides are applied, those populations of beneficial microorganisms collapse along with the pests you were looking to get rid of.
Now, because the beneficial organisms are gone, the pest pressure increases because there is nothing left to compete with.
This inevitably means more pesticides are applied to handle the even bigger pest issue created by the first application. Then, the cycle repeats, getting more expensive and more destructive every season.
The soil food web is nature's integrated pest management, and when properly supported, it can be the best pest preventative there is.
Predatory nematodes hunt pest larvae in the root zone. Beneficial fungi compete with pathogens for space. Bacterial communities produce compounds that suppress disease-causing organisms. This system is self-regulating when it is intact, and it costs nothing to run once it is built.
The only thing required to maintain it is to stop poisoning it.
Would you consider skipping the spray and working with Biological solutions if you knew a simple and cost-effective way to do so?
Consider joining us in India for a 2-week intensive hands-on workshop in India this October, where you’ll stay at the Isha Foundation Yoga Center, build compost and learn to apply amendments on a Conscious Plant-Sale Soil Farm, and re-learn what thousands of years of ancestors knew before the chemical industry erased it.
