Introducing our little elderberry kitchen -- on the farm! After many years of renting kitchen space we're super stocked to transition to our own custom elderberry processing factory!

Goash, it's so pleasant to bike through the elderberry fields on the way to the kitchen ๐Ÿ’œ

Over the years, we've been fortunate to process at some kitchens in Salmon Arm like the awesome Zest Commercial Food Hub ! Food hubs like Zest are vital to a healthy food system. They gave us affordable access to space and equipment and the community is awesome too.

Thanks Zest for providing us shared commercial space so we could grow into our own kitchen! We need 100 times more Zests in the region.

We're so grateful you choose locally grown elderberry! happy summer to you!

Elderberry bushes come in all sizes. Marge (pictured) and Jumbo are some our biggest varieties of the Sambucus nigra species. Both these varieteis make great berries in the fall!! If you're interested in growing, we'll have elderberry cuttings pre-sale in November. But for now, it's summer flower harvest time and we just got new dehydrators. I can't wait to restock elderflower tea next month!

Wondering about those little white dots on the elderberry cuttings?

They are roots growing from what is called lenticels - the breathing pores. Notice how the lenticels are all over the cutting?

This superpower means lots of places for roots to emerge and explains in part why it's so easy to grow your own bush!

A bit about the cuttings journey to you - we harvest the cuttings in the winter while the elderberry bush is dormant. Then we keep them dormant by storing them in the fridge where it's cool and dark, till planting time in spring.

If you store the cuttings where they get light, after a while as it warms up, like the ones in the first photo, they will start to grow green shoots from the nodes and roots from the lenticels.

If they are in the dark like the fridge, (photo on the right) the shoots will be less green for lack of photosynthesis but that's okay. Just be gentle with em when you plant, and best to plant when it's cool, moist and shady, if possible so not to shock the shoots too much. New green shoots will emerge with the sunrays.

Yay for the sun! and happy planting, however you tend your garden : )

Oh and this is your friendly reminder:

๐ŸŒฟlast day to get elderberry cuttings is May 4th!๐ŸŒฟ
