Chicken of the week!
Name: Hot Chocolate
Breed: Midnight Majesty Maran (we think?)
Egg Colour: Dark Brown Speckled
Age: 9 months

Hot Chocolate was named by our little dude when he had just turned 3, he was really in to calling anything that had brown or black colouring Hot Chocolate… so this gal shares her name with a stuffed bunny or 7 and also chocolate milk, chocolate of any kind and the actual hot chocolate drink. Hot Chocolate (the hen) is very vocal when she lays eggs and she also takes her sweet time in the nesting box. She will actually have other hens try sitting on her when she’s in the favored nesting box because they’re tired of waiting.

Chicken of the week!
Name: Indigo Montoya
Breed: Midnight Majesty Maran
Egg Colour: Dark Brown Speckled
Age: 9 months

Indigo was named so because her plumage appears to be a beautiful indigo colour when the light shines on her… and we added the Montoya to her name because we all love The Princess Bride. Since its gotten colder, Indigo has loved to get broody in the nesting boxes. She will sit on 8 or more eggs at a time - usually none of which are hers. She so far doesn’t mind us sneaking a hand under her to collect the eggs. Indigo also doesn’t mind being held either and will be the first to run over to eat out of your hand.

Name: Lovie
Breed: Speckled Sussex
Egg Colour: Light Brown
Age: 9 months

Lovie is named so because she is very loving, she loves snuggles and being held, plus she comes running when she sees people. Lovie likes to forage but will also eat out of your hand. Lovie makes little cooing sounds like a pigeon when you pet her (like her namesake pigeon in the movie Spy in Disguise). We didn’t actually order Lovie in our chick order but she was an order mistake that we are very happy with.

Chicken of the Week!
I know, I’m soooo behind but I promise to be better going forward.

Name: Sonic
Breed: Prairie Bluebell Egger
Egg Colour: Light Blue
Age: 8 months

I know I know, Sonic is not a blue chicken like her hedgehog namesake but she is FAST! Sonic is hands down the fastest chicken we have and she always has been. Though she isn’t blue feathered, Sonic does have blue cheeks and those cheeks match her pretty blue eggs. Sonic is an excellent forager and very curious, she can be cautious but not skittish and she will eat right out of your hand.

Our eggs are available regularly in the area of Sangudo, Mayerthorpe and Barrhead. We also make frequent trips to Spruce Grove and Beaumont.

You can purchase our eggs for $5/dozen or $7/eighteen.

We have a variety of beautiful egg colours in our boxes!

The main caretaker for our clucks is our 9yr old daughter - she loves her gals and they love her. All proceeds from egg sales goes to the little girl who does the hard work.

Our clucks are very healthy and happy. They get fresh water daily, eat locally made feed and in the winter months they roam a very large secure chicken run with fresh hay bedding to scratch and nibble on. They have a variety of produce to munch, plus scratch grains and meal worm treats (and a little alfalfa that they abscond with from the ducks). When the snow is gone and the family is at home then they are allowed to free range (with the protection of 3 livestock guardian dogs), plus they still get their healthy treats. Their favorite treat is to forage in our 5000sqft garden during the fall.

It’s Monday and time for our first Chicken of the week!
Name: Gus Gus AKA Augusta
Breed: Americana
Egg Colour: Sage Green
Age: 8 months

Gus Gus is a friendly and curious gal who loves a good velociraptoresque run from one tree to another in the summertime. She’s a favorite of a certain little girl and was the first chick to be named. As the biggest of all the chicks and lack of fear she really stood out. Instead of Cinderella and her mice our little girl has her chickens. We do have other Americanas in the flock but Gus Gus has always been special. She has proven to be an excellent forager and doesn’t fear the snow like many of her roommates. Gus Gus is no longer the biggest gal though, maybe more on the small size comparatively but she makes up for it with her bearded face and extra feathered neck that she fluff up to appear larger.
We love our Gus Gus and her beautiful eggs.
