We have made it to fall (and are quite literally hobbling across the final stretch). The frost is coming tonight, so the squash has to be evacuated from the field whether we’re ready or not 🙃

Connor twisted his knee last week, but is doing much better and though he is able to walk without crutches again, we anticipate a full recovery will be a few weeks. So fall wrap up is going to look very different for us this year! Ty for your kind messages and understanding our absence from market 💕

P.s. This pretty new to us variety is called Honey Bun. It’s a cross between Delicata and Acorn and will be up for grabs this weekend!

These prairie strips provide habitat and food for so many creatures and the best part about them is we didn’t even have to seed them. All of these plants were seeds the soil had banked, which is really amazing when you think about it. We w**ded out noxious w**ds (the ones that take over areas) like bind w**d & pig w**d and were left with a diverse mix of perennial wild flowers and grasses.

So far we have seen more butterflies & dragon flies than ever before! Snakes and toads are abundant (both important contributors to the garden) and the different types of flowers have staggered bloom time so there’s nectar for bees throughout the season.

We bow to nature on this one because this was not at all our plan for these areas, but they truly couldn’t have turned out any better 🐝

1950s tractor appreciation: our Farmall Super A 🫶Originally marketed to small scale farmers (which was most farms at the time) as a full replacement for the horse drawn teams which were still common until the end of the 1940s. Though she’s our oldest tractor, she’s definitely our most reliable and easiest to maintain ❤️

Spring plantings are well underway and our 2 acre field of 62 beds is 3/4 of the way full! Only 16 beds remaining for succession planting and fall crops like winter storage carrots, beets & cabbage

Building a home for winter squash 🏡

Heavy feeders getting the royal treatment of a ring of composted chicken manure for their roots to reach for as they grow and a good dose of compost made from our micro mats, discarded crop matter, and fall leaves 🍁🪱
