👋 Goodbye for now…

It is with mixed emotions that we plan to end our little pop up operation after 3+ seasons of service. Due to some recent life changes (all exciting news), it makes sense to close up shop for now. This Saturday March 16 is still happening. And we hope to do one last pop up, maybe April 20 (TBD). We will keep you posted!

Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to share my parents’ story (a humble diner in Ajax that ended too soon). They inspired me to take up cooking. I want to thank my family who tirelessly supported me and sacrificed so much so that I can do this. Thank you all for allowing me to break bread with you. On top of creating something fun and delicious for people to enjoy, our purpose was to nourish souls through serving waffles.

But here’s the plot twist, I was the recipient of this nourishment.

Before Sunnyside Waffles, I went through a traumatic experience with work. It was hard to imagine at the time that I could do anything else, but something nudged me to start serving people with what I had. For me, I had a waffle iron at home. I opened my backyard to people during the pandemic and that opened many more doors for us to connect with people. The one waffle iron I started with became four and the rest is history. I enjoyed every moment of it. Thank you for nourishing my soul.

So it’s goodbye for now, but like they say, never say never. Maybe Sunnyside Waffles will become a reunion special, a party trick of some sort. Who knows? Maybe a seasonal thing that Toronto has to offer. The possibilities are endless. Anyway, that’s it! It’s been a pleasure serving you all.

Thank you for the memories !

Su and Jeff are not only multiple award-winning brewers but also exceptional hosts. Thank you for providing us with a place to pop up over these past few years. This past Saturday marked our last pop-up on 22 Cranfield, and the people who showed up are a testament to the community Muddy York has built over the years. All the best in your relocation to Stouffville

On the topic of our favourite food to eat.

I’ve been talking to people about what they like eating lately. A lot of times it’s connected to what they grew up with - their childhood. Perhaps it’s related to during a time when things were a lot simpler. That feeling of reconnecting with a good memory in the past can bring a wellspring of joy and other emotions.

For me, it’s my relationship with my parents’ breakfast diner. The smell of bacon in the morning, eggs sizzling on a hot buttery pan, and staring at pancake holes being formed on the griddle, a sign saying that it’s ready to flip.

Sunnyside Waffles may be more known for chicken and waffles (a story on its own), but this Bacon Egg and Cheese sandwich (topped with fresh arugula and a kick of spicy mayo) is everything I love on a breakfast plate - the combination of sweet and savoury flavours served on a waffle. And you gotta have it with maple syrup. Yum! Thank you for letting me share my favourite thing to eat and a piece of my childhood with you 😋

Well, that wraps up our 2022 pop ups - our first full year of service! I thought this would be a great time to highlight some of our incredible experiences this past year:

💫 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬
From the start, I’ve always wanted to do something with bacon & eggs, so gave us a shot at serving our BEC sandwich which diversified our line up of waffle sandwiches. From there, we started to play around with in season fruits like strawberries and peaches! YUM!

💫 𝐖𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒!
Somehow reached out to us one day and asked if we wanted to be interviewed! We said, heck ya and the rest is history. We can’t be more pleased with the turn out of the article. Thank you!

💫 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧!
invited us out to their annual Danforth East Art Fair. This was a new and unfamiliar environment for us that took months of planning, but we took the challenge and it turned out to be one of our biggest events of the year! We had so much fun and it’s always good to see so many smiles all weekend long 🙂

This goes without saying but none of this is possible without the support of people! First with friends who came out to our backyard to partake on this new venture - offering their time, resources, and help. Thank you! Then there are our customers who follow us wherever we pop up! It’s always so special to see familiar faces and catch up from where we left off. Thank you!

Many of you have recently asked about our next steps. We are considering a few different options. What we know is, from serving waffle sandwiches out of our backyard, the heart behind this venture has always been about nourishing souls and creating space for people. We’ll see what things will look like next.

Thanks again for another incredible year and reading this incredibly long post.
