OUR JUNE OPEN HOURS

Our on-farm shop is open Fridays 2pm-5pm for the month of June.

To be honest, we had planned to be open more hours weekly this June but the cold spring has things coming along slowly at this point so, we adjust. There is no arguing with the weather after all.

But despite the cold spring, we DID open last Friday for our Annual On-Farm Seedling Sale and while it was a rainy, cold day itself, we had a wonderful turnout.

And last Friday was also just what we needed in terms of helping us to get the wheels in motion on our harvesting, washing, packing and selling systems! As you can imagine, we are a bit rusty after the long winter ;) We are fortunate to have an awesome team working here on the farm, so I'd say we are finding our footing at a strong pace. Nonetheless, there were metaphoric -- and literal -- cobwebs to clear!

As Michael puts it, "we are aiming to align ourselves with trustworthy things" -- not least of which are the seasons. So, as the weather slowly warms and the risk of frost passes, our harvests will grow, our variety will grow and our open hours will also grow this year.

We so appreciate you making the trip to the farm, eating with the season and sharing in the successes and challenges of this particular farming season.

The 2026 farm season has begun. We will see you Fridays 2pm-5pm for June.

Our 2026 farm season has begun!

We are off to the races as they say -- or as my mother use to say at least! ;)

First, a BIG thank you for the absolutely awesome afternoon last Friday.

This past Friday was our Annual On-Farm Seedling Sale and a soft launch into the 2026 season. We saw so many familiar faces and quite a few new folks too -- all in such great spirits, we felt awash in the shared excitement for the season.

It was just what we needed.

Oh and "awash" is THE perfect word as last Friday -- and much of last week -- were soggy! Thanks for making our Annual On-Farm Seedling Sale a success despite the weather.

It's been a cold spring so far which has crops coming along slowly. That is disappointing but a lovely longtime customer reminded me that (a) there is nothing to be done about the weather and, (b) that the veggies will come in abundance in the weeks ahead.

For now, we have decided to limit our open hours here on the farm to Fridays 2-5pm. This will be our schedule for June. Then, we will jump into our planned expanded hours for the 2026 season -- Thursdays 2pm-7pm and Fridays 2pm-5pm. We are very much looking forward to that.

And for June, we are looking forward to Friday afternoons in the barn. This Friday, we will move our remaining seedlings up to the barn for your shopping along with spring greens, green garlic, rhubarb, radishes, sauerkraut, honey, maple syrup, fresh eggs, local tea and more.

We are sold out of tomato plants but we have sweet peppers, lots of herbs, kale, rainbow chard, lettuce and more.

Come on out to the farm to enjoy the early season, pick up some fresh food and round out your garden.

Warmly, Keltie & the Small Holdings Farm team!

Our Annual On-Farm Seedling Sale is TODAY ... 🎉🎉🎉

Here is a peek at what we have available for you. All are annuals (not perennials) with a wide selection of veggies and flowers.

We will be here to help you choose. Knowing Michael and I, that help will likely include lots of stories and recommended favourites as well as helpful tips for growing! :)

Oh, and the barn shop is open with the first harvest of the season including arugula, spinach, rhubarb, green garlic and more!

Are you ready for your first farm visit of the 2026 season?

As with the first day of all things, there are a few details that we want to share to help make everyone's first day at the farm a truly enjoyable experience.

Below is a small "checklist" for our opening day, this Friday May 29th -- our Annual On-Farm Seedling Sale and a soft launch into the farm season!

1. Please remember to bring your own bags for vegetables, etc. and a sturdy carrying basket, box or tray for your seedlings will help ensure your plants make it home safe!

2. The seedling shopping will take place in the Nursery Greenhouse which is to the left and behind the barn. This is an opportunity for you to get a behind the scenes look at where we grow and care for our seedlings. The seedlings will be on tables and they will be labeled so you can hopefully find what you are looking for. Staff have been looking forward to this day too, so if you need any help, please ask! A reminder that the ground to the Nursery is a bit uneven -- please watch your step. After shopping the Nursery, bring your plants up to the barn for payment.

3. For CSA members who placed an order in our online shop, your order will be ready for you in the barn. We will be here to help and show you the ropes but basically one end of the barn has a big built in shelf for CSA member orders. Find your name and empty your bin into the shopping bags you brought from home -- then return the bin to the cubby hole for the next time. (Please note that the placement of your bin may change depending on the number of orders that week, so rather than look for your "spot", look for your name.) Oh, and BE SURE to read any notes written alongside your name so nothing is forgotten! You may, for example, need to grab your sauerkraut from the fridge.

We are so looking forward to seeing you!

Have you heard of "Green Garlic"?

This weekend, we had our first “farm lunch” of the season. Farm lunch is our tradition of Michael or I cooking lunch for the staff team once a week. That one day of the week, the staff don’t need to bring along a packed lunch and instead we gather around the picnic table and share a meal made from the farm.

This time of year, farm lunch includes the last of our storage veggies, pickles from our shelf, meat raised on our farm, tucked away veggies from the freezer and the first odds and ends for harvest.

This week’s lunch was roasted potatoes, maple syrup and mustard dressed ham, pickled cauliflower and the classic bread and butter pickles, bean salad, sourdough bread, and – freshly harvested – sauteed green garlic.

And it’s the green garlic I wanted to tell you about.

For the first 2-3 weeks of our season, we have young garlic – called “green garlic”. We harvest, wash and bunch it in what looks like big thick bunches of green onions. Green garlic is a perfect stand in for garlic in all recipes this time of year but it actually also holds its own as a veggie side dish…!

SAUTEED GREEN GARLIC
- One full bunch green garlic, cleaned and sliced into lengths of 2-3”
- Butter in a hot pan on the stove
- Salt, pepper and a splash of lemon juice

Set a pan on your stove at medium high heat. Add some butter to your pan – start with a tablespoon or so for flavour and to grease the pan – you can always add more. Cut your green garlic as the butter melts in your pan on the stove. Toss the green garlic into the hot pan. From there you just want to saute, moving the green garlic around in the pan now and then. Add a bit of salt and pepper. This won’t take long – just a few minutes. I wait to add the dash of lemon juice to the pan after taking the pan off the heat. That’s it! It is absolutely delicious.

This Friday is our opening day here on the farm. First and foremost, it is our Annual On-Farm Seedling Sale but we will also have the barn shop stocked with our very first harvests of the season as well as local goods from our partner producers including maple syrup from Creekside Farm Maple and, new this year, sauerkraut from Nova Kraut Sauerkraut

Growing up, I heard the adults in my life say that they did NOT have a green thumb. And you know, to each their own. But I will say that it made me think that some people are "good" at growing plants and some people just are not. I assumed, for many years, that I too was not good at growing green things.

Now, it's not to say that growing plants is easy -- but, it can be lots of fun and, in my experience, it is pretty meaningful and magical. Some things go wrong each and every season here on the farm still but Michael and I find that as long as enough goes well, the season is a success.

And in your garden, just like here on the farm, it is really nice to have some "quick wins". What I mean is that while you wait for your pole beans to take off, your tomato plants to yield, and your pumpkins to turn orange, it's heartening to see your peas sprout, your herbs to double in size and to harvest your lettuce. Know what I mean?

So, here's my big suggestion -- along with picking up tomato, pepper, pole bean, flowers and basil plants this week, also grab a 4 pack of lettuce. As you tend and wait and watch your garden tomatoes grow, you can be harvesting lettuce and quick herbs. Have a quick win -- and eat it too!

Our Annual On-Farm Seedling Sale is this Friday (May 29th) 2-6pm here on the farm. We'd love to kick the season off with you.

PS: We will have a first harvest of spinach, arugula, green garlic, rhubarb and more 🎉

SAVE THE DATE

Save the date for our Annual On-Farm Seedling Sale set for Friday, May 29th 2pm-7pm.

Our annual Seedling Sale is the kick off to our farm season and we cannot wait to welcome folks to the farm.

Our barn shop and our Nursery Greenhouse will be open.

Our Nursery Greenhouse is where we start all the transplants for our farm and for your backyard. And for our Annual Seedling Sale, we open this little greenhouse up for your browsing and shopping.

Our barn shop will be open with maple syrup, honey, sauerkraut, loose tea blends and more -- all thanks to our growing number of local partner producers!

Our first harvest of salad greens is likely still another week away but if that changes, we will certainly stock the barn shop with early veggies as well.

See you Friday, May 29th!
