Fall is a pretty good time to take a look at what you’ve got and stock up before winter really settles in.

Beef, chicken, pork… maybe a few things you forgot were even hiding in the back.

One of our favourite things about buying directly from a farmer is knowing where your food came from and having a freezer full of food you can actually feel good about feeding your family.

WHOLE CHICKENS ARE BACK! 🍗

Well, you asked… and we listened.

After being sold out for way too long, whole chickens are finally back at 5 Chicks and a Farmer! And if you’ve been waiting for them to return, whole chicken preorders are OPEN NOW.

They’ll start shipping out in early November, and you can choose from:

🐔 SMALL: 4 whole chickens
🐔 MEDIUM: 6 whole chickens
🐔 LARGE: 8 whole chickens

Because honestly, is there anything better than a whole chicken roasting in the oven on a chilly fall day?

Dinner tonight, leftovers for tomorrow, and save those bones for a batch of homemade broth. One chicken can go a surprisingly long way, especially when you’re feeding a family.

And just a heads up… we may sell out again this year. So if whole chicken is a staple in your freezer, don’t wait too long!

One season is wrapping up, but around here, we’re already thinking about the next one. 🌱

The cattle are making their last pass through the pasture for the season, and they’re finishing up with some of the best grazing of the year. Fall grass can be especially nutritious, making this final stretch of pasture a pretty good way to wrap things up.

At the same time, we’re getting cover crops planted. These crops help control weeds, protect the soil and provide nutrients that will help set the stage for next year’s crop.

That’s one of the things we love about farming. You’re never really working on just this season. A lot of what we do today is about setting things up for the season that comes next.

The cattle are finishing this year’s pasture season while the soil is already getting ready for next year. 🌱

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

We hope you’ll forgive us for being a little late with the well wishes. We were busy enjoying some time off (at least from social media, because we all know farming doesn’t take a break! 😂).

We hope you all had an amazing long weekend, filled your bellies with delicious food, and found a few extra things to be thankful for along the way. ❤️

It’s that time of year, so says the calendar anyway.

Anybody else’s calendar moving faster than their eyes can believe? Because somehow Thanksgiving is already on the horizon. 😳

So, with that in mind, here’s a post simply titled:

Thankful.

Thankful for a supportive wife who somehow continues to entertain all my crazy ideas.

Thankful for 4 wonderful daughters and the privilege of getting to know them more and more in all the little moments. Drives to the rink, helping around the farm, a last-minute snack at the kitchen counter or a text asking about a weird sound their car is making.

Thankful for a great team who keeps things running at 5 Chicks.

Thankful for wonderful customers who continue to come back year after year and support what we’re building here.

Thankful for extended family and great friends, near and far, who have supported both us and the business along the way.

And thankful for this land. For the opportunity to farm it, care for it and hopefully leave it a little better than we found it.

There’s a lot to be thankful for around here.

Happy Thanksgiving? Not quite yet. We’re not there. 😂

But thankful? Absolutely.

Do you know your farmer?

We’ve been thinking a lot lately about what that actually means.

When you buy from 5 Chicks and a Farmer, you don’t just know the name of the farm. You know the people behind it.

You know our cattle live right here on the farm, near the shores of Lake Huron. You know we move them from pasture to pasture, plan their feed and care for them throughout the seasons.

You can ask us where your food came from, how it was raised and what happens to it along the way. There’s no guessing.

But the best part is that “know your farmer” has become a two-way relationship.

We’ve gotten to know so many of you too. We know the families behind the orders, remember the little things and sometimes even know why you need to skip a delivery that month.

We’re not just delivering boxes of meat.

We’re delivering food to people we know.

That’s what “know your farmer” means to us. And it’s something we really love about what we do. ❤️
