It all starts with soil and sunlight.
Soil to hold the seeds and water. Sunlight to coax them to sprout. Soil rinsed off the fresh lettuce and cucumbers and scrubbed from the carrots and beets from the local farm stand. Thousand of yards of composted soil from spread on the land, scraped of invasive and reclaimed. And last night it’s the story of soil and sunlight woven into the creation of Swiya Farms and the future of the farm.
We hosted our Powering Swiya Farms Community dinner, hosted in collaboration with Sacred Earth Solar, shishalh Nation and the Sunshine Coast Community Solar Association and many members of the shíshálh nation and our farm team. Alongside , , Melina Laboucan-Massimo and Jack Edgar we shared the vision and plans for bringing solar power to Swiya Farms and energy sovereignty to the community. With a beautiful dinner made by with local produce!
In the shíshálh swiya, healing the land, energy sovereignty and food security are inextricably linked and we are so grateful that our 7 acres community-led Indigenous regenerative farm - ironically under the BC Hydro power lines but without electricity - is not only moving towards 100% solar energy which will enable farm operations like charging tools, refrigeration and process of more produce. We are also happy to share that as a part of this project 15 community members will receive training and certification in solar system installation this week with North American Solar Academy.
