🌱 Did You Know?

A 1% increase in soil organic matter can significantly improve water holding capacity.

Here’s why that matters in the Peace Country:

Soil organic matter (SOM) acts like a sponge. The more you have, the more water your soil can absorb and hold onto, instead of it running off or evaporating.

💧 A 1% increase in organic matter can help soil hold additional gallons of water per acre.
💧 That means more moisture available to your crop during dry periods.
💧 It can reduce plant stress during short-term drought.
💧 It improves infiltration during heavy rainfall events.

But it’s not just about water.

Higher organic matter also:
• Improves soil structure and aggregation
• Feeds soil biology
• Enhances nutrient cycling
• Supports stronger root development

In practical terms?
Better resilience. More consistent cropproduction. Improved long-term productivity.

Building organic matter doesn’t happen overnight - but practices like:
✔️ Maintaining ground cover
✔️ Extending grazing rotations
✔️ Reducing unnecessary tillage
✔️ Incorporating diverse forage species
✔️ Using cover crops where appropriate

…can gradually move the needle.

Healthy soil isn’t just dirt - it’s your farm’s water bank. 🌱

It’s been a while since we shared a recipe. Lamb shank is one of our favourite meals. Slow cooked to fall off the bone. Lots of collagen and bone marrow.
