A beautiful monarch butterfly enjoying our pollinators! 🦋🧡🪻
Here at Homestead Lavender, we have colours in bloom for all seasons! Lavender begins to bloom early summer and goes until late summer. Black-Eyed Susans start in late spring and goes until early autumn. Russian Sage, often mistaken as Lavender, also starts in late spring but goes until the middle of autumn. 💜💛
Fun facts!
- Monarch’s are poisonous to their predators. As caterpillars they eat milkweed leaves which gives them a toxin that they incorporate into their bodies. Their orange colouring warns predators that they are poisonous! 🦋🧡🐦⬛☠️
- Some bees will sleep on flowers and huddle together. Much like we use hotels, bees use flowers if they can’t make it back to the hive in time, or if the weather turns bad! Making flower patches, bee hotels! 🐝🛏️
- Most bee species are only active for a short period of time each year. However bumblebees are active all season long, live in large colonies, and pollinate a wide range of flowers, making them extremely important pollinators to plants and crops! 🐝🌾🪻🪴🫛
- Russian Sage is not considered real sage! Though it is very fragrant it is generally not eaten. Critters like rabbits, deer, and squirrels do not like to eat it either. However, they are a delectable treat for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds! Making them perfect pollinators for any garden!🪻🪴
