North American Beaver

Scientific Name: Castor canadensis

Habitat:
Beavers are found near rivers, lakes, and wetlands throughout North America, including Saskatchewan. They prefer areas with abundant trees and shrubs for building materials and food. By felling trees and constructing lodges and dams, beavers dramatically reshape their environment, creating wetlands that benefit many other species.

Diet:
Beavers are herbivores with a strong preference for the bark and cambium (soft inner bark) of trees such as aspen, willow, and birch. They also eat leaves, twigs, and aquatic plants. Their diet and building habits help control tree growth along waterways and contribute to nutrient cycling in ecosystems.

Behavior & Skills:
Beavers are famous for their engineering skills. Using their powerful teeth and dexterous front paws, they construct dams to slow water flow and create ponds. These ponds provide protection from predators, access to food in winter, and habitat for fish, birds, amphibians, and other wildlife. Beavers are mostly nocturnal and can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes, using their strong tails for swimming and balance.

Fun Fact:
A single beaver dam can be over 300 feet long! Their building projects are so effective that they’re often called “ecosystem engineers” because they create wetlands that support countless other species.

Conservation Status:
Beaver populations in North America are stable. Once heavily trapped for fur, they have rebounded due to conservation efforts. As a keystone species, beavers play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by creating wetland habitats, improving water quality, and preventing erosion.
