Today, the grill pops like memory, and I stand tall in the smoke, presenting myself the way my late father taught me—shoulders back, chin steady, and a heart as honest as a well‑marbled steer. In evaluating the life he lived and the legacy he left behind, I place him at the top of any class for the kind of strength that doesn’t need to announce itself.
My dad knew cattle the way some men know scripture. He read truth in bone and muscle, in birthweights and weaning weights, in EPDs that laid out a family history clearer than any written record. From him, I learned that real strength isn’t loud; it’s lived. It’s the kind of grit you taste in a burger cooked slow, crafted right, and earned through work you don’t brag about.
So on Beef Burger Day, I honor him not with tears, but with steadfastness. I present a presence that stands its ground and says, without wavering, “I am here. I am carrying the line. I am built from the same good stock.” In terms of composure, consistency, and structural integrity of character, I align myself with the example he set long before he left this world.
And if anyone’s evaluating me today, let them see this: that real love holds steady without chains, and refuses to fold itself into someone else’s limits. Let them understand that lineage isn’t a burden to pack around; it’s the foundation that carries me forward.
Finally, I chew the gristle the way he did—not for ease, but for truth. Because it reminds me I come from a man who lived wide open, loved without fear, and walked forward with nothing but courage in his hands. And though he’s gone, that courage is the part of him that still stands beside me in the ring.

The Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Gallery added another legendary name to its historic walls during the 2025 North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. On November 16, William H. “Bill” Rishel, a long-time Angus breeder from North Platte, Neb., was inducted as the 380th honoree into the prestigious gallery, a recognition reserved for individuals whose lifetime contributions have shaped the livestock industry.

Family, friends and industry leaders gathered at the induction banquet to celebrate Rishel’s career. The evening featured heartfelt speeches, historical reflections and the unveiling of an original oil portrait by artist Richard Halstead, now displayed in the Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Gallery.
