And so it begins in earnest! Two good men with considerable experience, talent and community vision will vie to become Sooke's fifth mayor (along, of course, with any other undeclared candidates who would add additional flavour, spice and outsider perspective to the race). Like us all, I'm eager to hear my council colleagues refine and communicate their respective takes on Sooke's potential and how they'll address our myriad challenges before making my choice on Oct. 17.

As noted earlier on this page, I won't be running for council again but intend to stay active on the sidelines, watching with keen interest from my hammock, occupying the mic at times during public comment, and sharing what I deem to be useful both there and here ...

i.e. it's worth nothing at this point that would-be candidates should bookmark the following link for election details. Sooke hasn't announced its dates yet, but judging by other BC municipalities, the nomination period is likely to run from Tues. Sept. 1 to Fri. Sept. 11 ... and advance voting is likely to be set for Wednesdays Oct. 7 and Oct. 14. We've already determined that the Muni Hall will again be used for advance voting and the EMCS lobby will work on election day given the gym is not available this time.

For political nerd/geeks like me fascinated by the endless cycle of election campaigns, these are interesting times indeed. My earnest hope is that we see a bounce back to the 40% minimum voter turnout we experienced in 2018. A lively, respectful, solution-oriented race between two (minimum) strong candidates will ensure that.

PS I will update this page once I get my blog operational again ... https://www.jeffbateman.ca/blog/vote Thank you, Moonfist, for your kind offer to assist this helpless technophobe! 🙂

Medicinal herb production is growing across the Pacific Northwest, creating opportunities for farmers to diversify crops and meet rising demand.

OSU Extension research outlines which medicinal herbs fit regional growing conditions, what markets are seeking, and the challenges growers face related to quality, processing and scale. Crops such as ashwagandha, red sage and astragalus show strong potential for local production.
