We are often asked how we manage to keep over 3000 varieties of seeds viable long-term in our Seed Library.
The short answer: our members!
The long answer: those who become members with us are given opportunities to participate in grow-outs. Through these and other projects, our member volunteers keep hundreds of varieties alive each year. We send out seeds in need of growing out (usually because they’re getting old and losing viability OR because we don’t have many samples of that variety), they grow them out, and then send samples back for us to store. There’s no way the paid staff here could do even a fraction of this. So thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers for this invaluable work you do with us! Our members are who keep Seeds of Diversity going.
