Eastern Garlic Producers

Eastern Garlic Producers Small garlic farm in South Lancaster, Ontario, dedicated to growing the best hardneck garlic.

We grow it with love, harvest it at its peak and send it out into the world exactly the way we’d want to bring it home ourselves 🧄

Somewhere in the last decade, life took a hard left, dropped me off in an garlic field and said, “Alright bud, figure it out.”

So I kinda did.

Not particularly gracefully. There were mistakes. There were more mistakes. More mistakes. And a whole cow thing that I don’t feel like talking about again. But the funny part is I thought getting here was the plan.

Apparently it was just the warm-up.

Planting season is creeping up and what comes next is going to look a little different around here.

Bigger operation. Bigger fields. Probably bigger problems. I mean, that seems to be how this works.

But we’ll get to that.

For now, it’s nice to take a look back at the season that somehow convinced me it was a good idea to keep this thing going 🤙

Back to the scene of the crime. This time I brought backup.

You already know what happened.

The cows, the garlic, the barn. One of those messes that feels a whole lot heavier when you know exactly what went into it.

After being depressed about it for a few days, I finally picked up a rake. Then my daughter picked up a rake. I figured she’d last a few minutes.

Well, she stayed start to finish.

Rake in her hands, following me around, making piles, messing up some of my piles and making the whole thing take longer than it probably should have.

And I loved every second of it.

Because somewhere between the first pile and the last, the whole reason we were there started to matter a little less.

The damage was still damage.

But I wasn’t thinking about it anymore.

I was watching my daughter work beside me.

Watching her make a game out of a mess that had damn near broken my heart a few days earlier.

The best part, as soon as we were done, this little traitor walked directly over to the cows and started petting them.

Apparently she found them innocent on all charges. I disagree with the verdict.

But watching her standing there with them, I couldn’t help but laugh.

I walked into that barn thinking about everything those cows had cost me.

I walked out thinking about what that mess had accidentally given me.

A whole day with my little girl that I’ll remember long after I’ve forgotten what those bulbs were worth.

Funny accounting, life.

Lost a few thousand dollars but somehow left richer.

I guess we’ll be okay after all 🤙

Because sometimes life doesn’t hand you lemons.

Sometimes it sends 12,000 pounds of beef through the barn door and lets you figure out the metaphor yourself.

Ugh.

So a few days ago I got a text saying the cows had gotten into the garlic barn.

I was in the middle of one of those mornings where everything is happening at once, so I laughed it off. Figured they wandered in, knocked a few things over and carried on with their little cow lives.

Then I finally got a second to go look.

Yeah.

Excuse my language, they threw a f*cking house party.

Garlic knocked over. Garlic crushed. Garlic stepped on. Months of work suddenly sitting on the barn floor looking like the cows had developed a personal beef with me.

And now that I’ve actually gone through everything and assessed the damage, we’re talking thousands of dollars in losses.

And because we pride ourselves on the quality of what we sell, anything that hit the ground, got stepped on, crushed or damaged isn’t getting passed along to customers or used.

That’s not how we do things.

I’ll admit, standing there looking at it all, I came pretty damn close to saying screw it and pulling the plug on the whole thing.

You spend months growing it. Weeks harvesting it. You finally get everything tucked away in the barn and think maybe, just maybe, you can exhale for five minutes.

Apparently the cows heard about the five minutes.

But you know what? Life happens. Sh*t happens.

And if there’s one thing I’ve always been pretty good at, it’s taking a sh*tty situation, swearing at it for an appropriate amount of time and then figuring out what the hell I’m doing next.

So that’s where we’re at.

Reset. Regroup. Keep moving.

So for this season I will continue to stock the roadside stand but larger / wholesale orders will be limited.

I took a hit.

A pretty damn good one.

But I’m not done.

Besides, quitting because I got outsmarted by a bunch of cows would be a pretty embarrassing way to end it all 🤙

Dear person (or people) stealing garlic,

I’ve been trying to figure you out.

If you’re hungry, garlic is a terrible choice. You can’t bite into it like an apple and call it dinner.

If that’s really the problem, come find me.

I’ll buy you a meal. I’m not joking.

If you just wanted garlic, you could’ve asked. Everyone around here tells me I already give away more than I should. They’re probably right. I bring some to the Lancaster Food Pantry whenever I can because that’s what good neighbours are supposed to do. I literally gave a man some garlic at the gas station this morning just because. I’d much rather hand you a bundle than wonder why another one disappeared overnight.

The funny part is you probably think you’re stealing garlic.

You’re not.

You’re stealing trust.

This little stand only works because hundreds of strangers decide to be decent people when nobody’s watching. Every time you take something without paying, you’re betting that eventually we’ll stop believing in everyone else too.

I’d really rather lose that bet.

We’re putting up more cameras because apparently that’s the world we live in now.

Although I’m still considering the cheaper option. A lawn chair. A beer. A bush. And a buddy the size of a refrigerator.

Anyways, if you need help, ask. If you need garlic, ask.

If you just enjoy stealing from my family, I hope every recipe you make for the rest of your life calls for exactly one clove more than you have.

Love always,
Johnny the garlic guy

That escalated quickly.

You folks turned the Lancaster Yard Sale into a garlic clearance event, then drove over to the roadside stand and finished what you started.

So if you stopped by the stand this weekend and it was empty. That’s your fault. Collectively.

Don’t worry. We filled it back up.

And before we packed it in, we dropped a couple dozen bulbs off at the South Lancaster Community Food Pantry. If we’re lucky enough to grow this thing, we’d better remember why we started it.

Seriously though, thank you for showing up. And thank you Epicerie Henderson's Grocery for letting us post up in front of the store.

You’re not just buying garlic anymore. You’re showing these two kids that crazy ideas are worth chasing and that with enough vision, enough hustle and a community behind you, something that started as almost nothing can grow into something pretty special. You da best 🤜🤛

Now it’s back to arguing with weeds.

Catch us when you catch us 🧄

The Lancaster Yard Sale is one of our favourite days of the year because by noon the whole town looks like they’ve joined some weird garlic cult. Everywhere you look, someone’s proudly carrying a stalk over their shoulder.

Honestly… it makes us laugh every single year.

Come join the cult. We’ll be in front of Epicerie Henderson's Grocery all day!

Oh and here’s a video of our favorite cow just because.

See you soon homies 🤜🤛

Good news or bad news first?

Let’s just start with the good news.. The first week at the stand has been incredible. We’ve been restocking twice a day, meeting a ton of great people and watching fresh garlic disappear faster than we expected.

The bad news, not all of it has been paid for.

We’ve had quite a bit of garlic “walk away” this week. We knew that might happen eventually. We just didn’t think “eventually” meant every day.

And no pity party over here. Most people are honest and that’s exactly who this stand was built for.

We’ll just keep filling the shelves and keep trusting that the good folks outnumber the handful who think garlic grows itself.

See you at the stand. Bring cash.. And your conscience 😉

People think the best part of farming is harvest.

They’re wrong.

It’s that five minutes when everything’s parked, nobody needs anything from you and the sky starts acting like it rehearsed this all afternoon.

It’ll spend twelve hours trying to humble you then give you a sunset that makes you think maybe you didn’t do so bad after all 🤙

Added flowers.

Hung one of those cute little “Farm Fresh” signs.

Instead.. We spent that time working the fields to give you the best product ever.

Seems like a better investment.

And the garlic is the pretty part anyways.
