Well we survived another calving season - the busiest ever with 65 calves born!

Now we are full swing into planting season. Many acres of oats are in; a new to us crop this year - Triticale; and soon our sorghum will go in. We’ve decided not to grow corn for feed this year, with the high fuel and fertilizer costs.

And let’s complain about the weather (farmers do that alot)! We really need some rain to water the seeds so the crops get a good start.

You know the saying …. Farming isn’t for the faint of heart! Enough work here for three, not enough pay for one. We’re thankful for all the hours of help the boys put in 👨‍🌾🌾🍃❤️

🌱 Small Farm Facts 🌱

In New Brunswick, small farms make up the majority of our agricultural sector, and their impact goes far beyond what the numbers alone might suggest.

The term "hobby farm" can be a misnomer, as there are hundreds of highly successful small farm businesses that require long hours of hard labour every day to supply healthy food to their communities.

These small farms generate an estimated $150M – $300M+ annually to local economies when multiplier effects are included.

Check out this map of all livestock farms in the Capital Region Service Commission. These farms all depend on timely access to veterinary services and the diagnostic lab.

Small farms aren’t just a part of our agriculture system, they’re a foundation of resilient, local, community-based food systems.
