Silkies are just the cutest chicks. These little ones will grow up to be fluffy and friendly, and the hens will lay a mini cream or pink egg. Silkies have black skin, bones and organs, 5 toes and feathers on their feet. They don’t do well in subzero conditions so we keep them in the barn in the winter but they roam around the back yard in the summer

The older chick are growing great. They are 3 weeks old now. There’s 8 ameraucanas and probably around 20 leghorn ameraucana cross. Ameraucanas lay a nice blue or bluey green egg. Leghorn ameraucana cross hens will lay a white or light blue egg. They are more hardy than pure leghorns but still lay daily.

Female goats show specific signs when they are in estrus. They wag their tails, are a bit friendlier, and sometimes mount the other goats. There are also some other physical symptoms. Male goats respond by blubbering and yelling, sticking their tongues out and spitting in the female’s faces, they kick and snort and try to keep other goats away. Very attractive.

Rookie is fine with me being around Billie, and has never tried to lunge at me, but I always keep an eye on him when the girls are in the mood. I think things actually might be slowing down; he’s not as noisy or stinky as he sometimes is. .

At least once a year, I wonder why we live here. Of all the places in the world why does northern Canada make sense? The air hurts your face, the cold can take your breath away, your farm animals need special attention to ensure warm bedding, freshwater, and enough feed to make it through the winter months. The summer is so short yet it’s the best and busiest time for farming and gardening. But there’s also great things about being in Canada. I’m lucky to live and work here on Treaty 6 territory. To tolerate this bone chilling weather, to look forward to spring - thumbing through my seed catalogues, to try to make the best of the long days in the short summer is just a part of being Canadian.

Farmer and chicken friends: have you ever seen a spherical egg? This was a first for me. I was trying to decide if I could save it somehow, although it would have been hard to preserve the shell, it having been frozen/cracked previously. But then my husband used it to prep dinner, and there went my shot at cashing in on my one-in-a-billion egg haha

You’re wearing your fur hood wrong!
If you roll your fur inside your hood, it’s way more effective at keeping your head warm. Cold air doesn’t get inside, and your hood stays put with a gust of wind. This is the only parka that keeps me warm.
