We’ve been pretty quiet on social media lately as things have been busy.

We welcomed our first home bred calves to the farm this spring. This is a new experience for Joey and I as we had never calved out cows before; luckily everything went textbook and now we have 3 lovely heifers (girls) and one bull (boy) to add to the herd.

Next up is hay season, we are hoping to get in the fields in early July as soon as the weather permits.

Enjoy some baby spam, y’all!

We experienced many challenges this past year. The hardest being the loss of Sunny in March.

That said, we persevered and finished the year with many personal and agricultural wins which we’ll reflect on today.

In early spring we introduced pigs to our farm, Rachel became certified in AI (artificial insemination) and began breeding our heifers, this summer we welcomed Charlie to our family, baled the highest number of acres to date (and kept all of our old equipment running by the skin of our teeth), began our silvopasture project, and most important: received fantastic feedback on the increasingly good quality of our farm-raised meats.

This past year has taught us the importance of keeping our eyes on our goals while also working in enough down time to ensure we keep our stamina and maintain good mental health. Quality is better than quantity and the flame must always remain lit or else what is this all for.

Cheers to a 2025 full of continued learning, growing and self care.

Some “food” for thought

We will begin taking orders for our fall 2025 beef shortly. Here are some reasons to consider buying a whole, side or quarter beef:

🥩 you are supporting local farmers who support the local economy

🥩 you know where your food comes from and how the livestock was raised. In fact most farmers will allow visitors to come see the animals and where they live. We’re an open book!

🥩 your meat was raised in Canada and therefore followed all Canadian animal husbandry requirements to ensure livestock lived quality, healthy lives

🥩 the overall cost per lb is much lower compared to grocery store cuts

🥩 you customize how you want all of your meat cut and packaged based on your families’ needs

🥩 your meat is flash frozen after packaging and will easily last well over a year in your freezer tasting just as fresh as grocery store cuts

🥩 all meat sold in Canada must be processed at a licensed facility. Farmers are required to make sure there are no antibiotics or medication in your meat before processing and all meat is inspected before being packaged and sold

Any questions? DM us!

Happy BBQing!

We’ve mentioned the term Silvopasture before, but here is a great before and after of what we mean.

Silvopasture is the practice of pasturing grazing animals on land that still retains trees and a mixed variety of edible greens. It’s an ancient stewardship practice with many benefits that align with our ideology:

1) it allows us to utilize nonarable (non-farmable) land for pasture. Our silvopasture acreage may have outcroppings of the Canada shield and other features that make it dangerous to run a tractor over but is safe for cows to navigate

2) it’s mutually beneficial to nature since we aren’t mono-cropping the area and leaving trees, plants and other habitats that wildlife uses. The cows provide manure for existing plants to use as fertilizer and the presence of difference species of rotting plants each year result in a healthier soil base for future plants to grow

3) the grasses are more drought resistant due to tree canopy coverage and our wooded areas are less prone to wildfires since the livestock removes most of the dead flammable underbrush while grazing

4) by selectively culling dead, crowded or diseased trees to open the canopy for grass growth, we are allowing remaining tree stock to grow larger and straighter for future lumber needs

As you can see in photo 1 and 2, there is a huge difference once the cows grazed down the underbrush and we came in to remove low branches. By the end of the summer this “forest” was growing plenty of grass.

We tested a couple acres this summer with great success and have already begun the next phase for summer 2025.
