Yesterday we finished our August Farm Dinner menu. Today we traded chef knives for wrenches.

There’s always a fairly long list of jobs around here that get pushed aside while we’re in the middle of Farm Dinner season.

So Sam and I spent the rainy morning getting dirty, changing fluids, pulling things apart, figuring out what needed fixing and generally discovering that a nearly 50-year-old tractor is pretty good at finding ways to keep you busy.

This is a side of Lynn River Farm that probably doesn’t show up on here often enough.

Farm Dinners might be what brings a lot of people through the gate, but behind those dinners are tractors, gardens, animals, repairs, maintenance and a whole pile of jobs that keep the farm moving and help make those dinners possible.

And after a very busy August, spending a rainy morning in the garage with my boy was a pretty good way to end our week.

The Wind Down.

Have I told you before how much I love Farm Dinners?
They are everything. ❤️

So this time of year when I look at my reservation book and all the dates are filling up I am sad but thankful for all the people that want to dine with us.

Last week we had one of those dinners I know I will remember for a long time.

It had poured rain which you think would damper people spirits, but it doesn’t. The magic is still in full force.
The rain didn’t last long and a double rainbow came out. We had a gorgeous sunset.
Everyone was relaxed enjoying each other’s company and the music was amazing.

And then, toward the end of the night, I looked around.

Every single table was singing along to the last few songs. Every table.

I turned to Mike and said, “Look at what we have created. All these people coming to our place having this moment together!”

I couldn’t be more grateful! So needless to say I am never ready for the wind down but here it is:

Farm to table is about more than the food. 🌧️🌻🔥

Far too often when we think about farm to table, we think only about what’s on the plate — where it was grown and who prepared it.

But the environment is part of it too.

When you choose to eat outside, on the farm where much of that food was grown, you also choose to experience the farm as it actually is — the landscape, the animals, the heat, the breeze, the rain and sometimes a little mud.

Some nights bring a beautiful sunset and a warm summer breeze. Others bring grey skies, rain, wind or heat. And every once in a while, the weather simply has the final say.

Today we’re watching the radar, tying down tents, protecting the fires and preparing for whatever comes.

The weather isn’t separate from the experience. It’s part of the experience.

The fires will be lit, dinner will be cooking, and tonight we’ll gather around the table together. 🌧️🔥🌻

Oh sweet August, the heart of summer.

You are a reminder to cherish the last days of summer with those we love, celebrating the true abundance of our farming season and all Perth County has to offer!

This August menu think dishes so flavourful only the garden could create them. Tomatoes, sweet corn, watermelon, peaches and absolutely everything else the season promises to provide.

We can’t wait to see you this August. ❤️

👋 Saying our goodbyes to June

We loved you for the warmer days, the much-needed rain.

You raised our spirits as the farm filled with people.
From sold-out dinners to all the people who came to help save the garden from the weeds, June was beautiful.

We hatched ducklings, welcomed new chicks and turkeys, sent bigger birds out, enjoyed every ball game, and are celebrating the end of another school year.

Now we can’t wait to show off JULY — your table is set, a fantastic new menu is planned, we are ready to pull out a chair for you and your guests.

Looking forward to hosting you on the farm! ❤️

Before the plate hits the table… 🌱

There are chickens to move 🐔, gardens to tend 🥕, ducks to feed 🦆, and plenty of jobs to keep everyone busy 🚜.

Farm dinners may only last a few hours, but the work behind them happens every day.

This was a look at our week on the farm.
