Butterflies prefer sunny open areas and often land on haskap leaves to warm their wings before moving toward nectar rich wildflowers. Moths come later, weaving through the rows at dusk and helping with night pollination. Both insects rely on healthy habitat and diverse plant life, which is why our native plantings and wetland restoration have made such a difference.

Their presence adds movement, colour, and life to the orchard. When butterflies float through the rows or moths rise in the evening light it feels like the farm has its own gentle heartbeat. These small creatures help connect the orchard to the wider ecosystem and remind us how many forms of life depend on healthy land.

Every haskap plant starts small, spending its first year building a strong root system. Most of the growth you cannot see is happening underground. Haskaps take time to mature. They begin producing small amounts of fruit around year three, and by year four or five the plants are full, healthy, and ready for consistent harvests. Once established they can produce for decades. Watching a tiny haskap grow into a fruiting shrub is a slow and rewarding part of orchard life. Good roots create good berries.

The toads and frogs that live around our farm are small, but their impact is huge. They patrol the rows, hunt insects, and move between water and soil with an ease that only amphibians have. We often find these little guys in the most interesting spots while we work!

Amphibians help keep pest pressure low and contribute to the balance of the entire ecosystem. Their presence shows how interconnected the orchard and the wetland have become. When the chorus starts up at night it feels like the land is alive in a quiet and unexpected way.

By offering safe nesting sites we help birds find stable places to breed, rest, and return year after year. In return they help manage insects, spread native plant seeds, and bring a steady rhythm of life to the farm. Their flights between the wetland and orchard weave the two ecosystems together in a way only wildlife can.

Bird houses may look small but they support an entire cycle of life. They create continuity, welcome new generations, and keep the land lively from early spring to late fall.

Water is one of the most valuable resources in Alberta agriculture. Healthy soil holds water longer, releases it more evenly to plants, and supports growth during dry periods. One of the best ways to improve this natural water storage is by increasing soil organic matter.

Research shows that even a 1 percent increase in soil organic matter can improve the soil’s ability to retain plant available water. This happens because organic matter improves soil structure, increases pore space, and helps the soil act like a sponge instead of letting water run off or evaporate too quickly.

In practical terms this means healthier plants, stronger berry development, and greater resilience during heat or drought. Our regenerative practices, compost extracts, and native plant integrations all work toward slowly rebuilding this organic matter so the orchard can thrive with less stress and more stability.

The Best Way to Thaw Frozen Haskaps:
To keep their shape place frozen haskaps in a single layer on a pan and thaw them slowly in the refrigerator. For baking or sauces use them straight from the freezer for the best texture and flavour.
